It is the only remaining gatehouse of the medieval village fortifications. The remaining stone hinges give an idea of how mighty the gate was. Until the middle of this century, the gate tower was used as a dwelling.

One of the two remaining city gates and landmark of the municipality of Gemmrigheim.

After the monolith had been missing for some time, it is now back in its old place (as of 08/2024), freshly cleaned of various graffiti.

The old town hall, with its hipped roof and turret, was built in 1805 after the previous building had become so dilapidated that it required the addition of heavy beams. To finance the project, the town council decided to offer individual, demolition-ready parts of the old building for sale. Buyers were required to carry out the demolition work at their own expense and were not permitted to damage the stone foundation upon which the new building was to be erected. 500 guilders were raised in this way, and construction of the town hall, as it stands today, could begin. In 1995, the historic 1805 building was augmented with a modern, spacious extension featuring a steel and glass facade and a shed roof. A beautiful section of the Neckar Valley Cycle Route

The Besigheim Gate is often considered a landmark of Gemmrigheim, alongside the famous coat of arms, the vine with the five blue grapes. Like the others, this gate tower was equipped with gates that were closed at night. It was only after the town expanded beyond the wall that the gates were stopped being closed in the 19th century. But the gate wings at the Besigheim Gate were left until the 1940s, as protection against flotsam when the Neckar flooded. The formerly Gothic arch had to be enlarged in 1952 and adapted to the increasing bus and heavy traffic that still passed through this gate at that time. The gatehouse was repurchased by the municipality from private ownership in 1957. Due to the change in traffic routing in 1974, the gate no longer represents a traffic obstacle; in 1982/83 the municipality thoroughly renovated the Besigheim Gate and set up an apartment in it, although this is no longer used today.
