At around 325 meters long and 200 meters wide, the Nonnenmattweiher pond isn't particularly large, but it's truly beautiful to look at. So, if you're looking for a wonderfully located swimming lake in the Black Forest, you're in the right place by jumping into this medieval lake near Badenweiler. Here, you can swim in peace and enjoy the Black Forest in all its splendor. After the lake had probably silted up in the Middle Ages, it was subsequently dammed. According to legend, a nunnery is said to have sunk into the lake. However, the lake's name doesn't stem from this legend, but rather from the fact that fattening cows, called nuns, used to grazed the pastures surrounding the lake. The Belchenhaus was built in 1898 as a shelter below the Belchen summit. It is located at 1,360 meters and is therefore the highest inn and restaurant in Baden-Württemberg. Guests sometimes describe the south terrace in front of the house as one of the most beautiful tavern terraces in the Black Forest.

Flora and fauna Several species of peat moss grow on the peat island, such as the sheath cotton grass (Eriophorum vaginatum) and several peculiarities such as the cranberry (Vacinium oxycoccos) and the round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia). In the Nonnenmattweiher and in its surroundings u. a. following animal species were found: common toad, mountain newt, thread newt, mountain lizard, lemon canary, capercaillie. The fish stock consists of species such as trout, eel, pike, zander, tench and carp.

From the Weiherfelsen you have a wonderful view of the Nonnenmattweiher. 🤩 It's worth stopping by here. Depending on the hiking direction, mine has a steep climb or steep descent.
