I always seem to hit this climb when I've already got plenty of miles in my legs! So it's always a challenge but a measured pace is key. Road surface is good and there's enough room for cars to get past you and not be breathing down your neck. 😉

A decent longish climb up through Brassington to Longcliffe. Pretty steep through the village then keeps on giving as you leave!

Next view across conservation area down reservoir. Lots of bird life to look out for

Planning for the reservoir started in the 1960s and construction started in 1979. In 1984, there was a partial collapse of the dam before it was filled. The dam was removed before the construction of a new dam began in 1989. The finished reservoir was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1992.

This tower was initially a mystery to us, but we later discovered that it houses the pumping system for the water. It also looks quite cool floating on the water.

Nice little centre to find out more about the area

St James’ Church sits high on the side of a hill overlooking Brassington village, overlooking its narrow streets and fine old buildings. It is essentially a Norman church with a fine south arcade of three bays, south chancel aisle of two bays, a later north aisle, and a Norman tower. The south porch is 13th century as proved by its outer doorway

Limestone rock feature better known locally as the Lady Chair. It can be seen next to a footpath which crosses Carsington Pasture. The route provides spectacular views over Carsington Water.

The mine is named after the rich diamond city of 17th century India, and this name was probably applied when the rich ores were discovered. Up to the first World War the mine was worked from two shafts, Upper and Lower Golconda, the latter lying adjacent to Griffe House (later New Harboro' Farm), the former lying some 350m to the south-east. Haulage was by kibble and access by ladders. In 1915 the Hopton Mining Company fittted a cage and winding gear in the Upper Golconda shaft. Inclines were later built. The Lower Golconda shaft is no longer safe and has been stripped of its ladders and covered.

The church contains many Norman features such as the tower and porch and internally has some fine Ashford-in-the-Water ‘Black Marble’ columns.

The church may date from the 13th century. A sundial set into the east wall is inscribed Re-edified 1648. The west end gallery has an inscription This loft was erected at the onely charge of Sir Philp Gell, Baronett. Anno Domini 1704 by consent of the parish at a meeting in Carsington: for the use of his tenants in Hopton.

Carsington Water is a reservoir managed by Severn Trent Water. Its main objective is to allow them to manage the flow of the River Derwent. During the winter and at times of high flow the river water is piped into the reservoir, the water is then released at times of lower flow to maintain the supply and river levels all year. Plans for the reservoir started in 1960 and construction started in 1979. A collapse of the partially constructed dam in 1984 set the project back and it wasn’t completed until 1992. Today there are nice walking trails with wooden sculpture all around the reservoir. There is a visitor centre and RSPB shop and wildlife reserve. The Carsington sailing club also uses the lake and it's popular with fishing people.

If you need a breather on the way round, someone has thoughtfully installed a carved wooden armchair in the middle of a field for you to rest your legs and take in the view.
