The lower Trauntal between Gmunden and Wels is designated as a bird sanctuary of European importance. The river itself, the alluvial forests along its banks and the adjoining cultural landscape are breeding areas and habitats for numerous species that have now become rare.

They are located in the Schachenwald north of the main town of the municipality near the village of Heiligenkreuz. The Schacherteiche are four large ponds in the area of the market town of Kremsmünster in the Upper Austrian district of Kirchdorf.

The Lower Traun is one of the last larger natural near-natural river ecosystem in Upper Austria. With the bike you can enjoy it environmentally friendly and close to nature. It is a scenic highlight and it houses many rare species, especially bird species worthy of protection. The Schachenwald and the Schacherteiche are part of this ecosystem and easy to enjoy.
