A beautiful section of route 27 Granite Way where the trail opens up as you pass across the Meldon Viaduct. Views across show the undulating hills of the highest area within Dartmoor National park where High Willhays and Yes Tor are situated.

Meldon Reservoir was constructed in the 1970s to supply water to the surrounding area. The car park by the dam offers good access to the high tors of north Dartmoor. Run across the dam and up onto the moor or along the enjoyable lakeside trail.

Great to include on a hike or run, or even cycle. Great views of the valley and reservoir/dam

Follow this path to go to Black-a-tor. Amazing views to the reservoir Closer to the Dam there is a picnic area with tables.

Lydford is a pretty little village on the edge of Dartmoor National Park and hides, within its boundaries, several amazing features. One of these is its castle, of Norman origin that was rebuilt in the late 12th century with the tower being renovated in the 13th century. Consistently used over the centuries and repeatedly overhauled, it eventually fell into disuse in the 19th century. Free to enter, you can enjoy its large, sloping lawn after you've had a nose about the tiny building. A perfect picnic spot, the castle sits in utter tranquillity.

Old stone walls are part and parcel of Dartmoor's incredible landscape. Still a relatively wild national park, the walls that criss cross parts of the moor use local stone and traditional methods, becoming a part of the natural landscape. The stone walls are a haven for lichens, moss, flowers and other plants, making them fascinating habitats by themselves. This trail is bordered by traditional walls that have stood for decades.

One of two viaducts on the Granite Way, Lake Viaduct is an impressive granite span with nine arches. Built for the now-closed railway reaching from Plymouth to Okehampton, the viaduct was built in the late 1800s. Today, the railway is gone and the viaduct resurfaced, forming a foot and cycle path on the Granite Way and the Dartmoor Way. It’s a wonderful place to stop, with benches at intervals and views east to the rugged moor and west to flatter, patchwork landscapes.

Part of the Granite Way and National Cycle Route 27 (Drake's Trail), Meldon Viaduct was built to carry rail traffic. The trains stopped in the early 90s, the viaduct being deemed too weak and shortly after, it was converted to a cycle and footpath. High above the West Okement River just north of Meldon Reservoir, the viaduct appears rather suddenly as you peddle along from Okehampton. Made of iron, it offers fantastic views both up and downriver, with Yes Tor, Dartmoor's second-highest summit, rising just behind. It's one of two viaducts on the Granite Way and well worth seeing.

The bridge carries the Granite Way across the valley. The Granite Way is a hard surfaced cycle way ideal for families and children as it’s the old railway so no hills. There’s also plenty of places to stop and fantastic views. Well worth a visit.

Meldon Viaduct carried the London and South Western Railway across the West Okement River. Its now a multi use path with stunning views.

The first Christian church in Lydford was a wooden structure built c. 650 AD. It is probable that this church was burnt down by the Vikings in their raid of 997 AD. The dedication of the parish church to St. Petrock would seem to indicate that it was built on the site of an existing British settlement. The church was later rebuilt in the perpendicular gothic style, and although ostensibly Norman, some of the architectural furniture, for example the font, were of the Anglo-Saxon style (or at latest, early Norman), thus it would appear that the church was rebuilt upon the site of the earlier building. The church was enlarged in the 13th century, the tower being added in the 15th century. A further enlargement occurred c. 1890 with the addition of the vestry and northern aisle.

Lydford is a small ancient village on the banks of the river Lyd established by King Alfred late in the 9th century as a fortification to defend the country from the Vikings and the Cornish. The village became famous for its silver pennies mined and minted locally and the stunning Lydford Gorge with the White Lady Waterfall. Lydford has also been home to two medieval castles, one of which still remains. It was built in the year 1195 at a reported cost of £32 originally as a Royal castle given by King John to William Bruere in 1216 and then by King Henry III to his brother, Richard, Earl of Cornwall, in 1337. Throughout the centuries the castle was notoriously known as ‘a strong house for keeping prisoners’, and by the 18th century, it was used purely as a court of law and gaol being described as ‘being a place most odious, filthy and vile...'. The court and prison earned a grim reputation for hanging defendants in the morning and passing judgement in the afternoon. In 1900 S. Baring-Gould mentioned in his 'A book of Dartmoor' a poem attributed to William Browne in 1644:- "I oft have heard of Lydford Law, How in the morn they hang and draw, And sit in judgment after: At first I wondered at it much, But soon I found the matter such As it deserved no laughter. They have a castle on a hill; I took it for some old wind-mill, The vanes blown off by weather. Than lie therein one night 'tis guessed 'Twere better to be stoned or pressed Or hanged, ere you come thither." Lydford Castle's role continued right up until the early nineteenth century when it was abandoned in preference to a new prison built at Princetown to house French prisoners of war. This has since become the infamous Dartmoor Prison.
