Great viewing point across Dartmoor

The bridge provides lovely views along the valley.

A few lights in the tunnel brighten things up, but there are a few spots where visibility can be a little low.

This is an exciting section of the glorious 21-mile Drake's Trail cycling path that runs through Dartmoor. You will pass through enchanting forestry featuring seasonal bluebells and over Magpie Viaduct, where you'll be afforded some wonderful birds-eye views of the surrounding landscape.

Gem Bridge is closed for repairs until 4th June - no access for cyclists or pedestrians. There are small steps you can go down which locals said would allow you to cross but we're not from here so we weren't sure as there were no diversion signs at all. If cycling around the closure time ask locals about diversion before you get to the bridge just incase!

At the Abbey Bridge the River Tavy flows across the weir, sometimes also known as Parkwood Weir.

The Shillamill Viaduct was built to carry the Plymouth, Devonport and South Western Junction Railway across the River Lumburn. It was completed in 1890 but is no longer in use since the dissolution of the railway line in 1968.

The towpath on the bank of the Tavistock Canal is the perfect flat trail. You quickly escape the built up area of Tavistock into the calm and quiet watersedge. The canal was completed in 1817 and was used to transport cargo to Morwellham Quay. The flow of water is still used to power a hydroelectric plant. Keep a watch out for a flash of blue as you run along, kingfishers are often spotted here.

Magpie Viaduct was designed by Brunel and originally built in 1859 from granite and timber, then rebuilt in 1902 in Staffordshire brick. From here you can also enjoy a raised vantage point for views over Dartmoor.

Gem Bridge towers 78 feet (24 m) above the River Walkham, affording wonderful views over the valley below. Until 1965, the original Walkham Viaduct would have stood here. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it was demolished after the closure of the railway. It's a wonderful experience to cycle over the bridge, especially in autumn when the trees are painted red.

Take lights if your going to ride this tunnel and beware of pedestrians who may not have torches.

Great walk, the footpath from the top of brook lane/Rix hill is not well used, just follow the hedgeline!

the shingle beach at the riverside is nice for brief stop and the old mine entrance is worth a look. you can see the old support timbers and we saw a sleeping bat, so didn't want to disturb the little and moved on before too long.

Towering above the River Walkham, Gem Bridge is an impressive walkway that stands on the site of a former railway bridge, built by Brunel. Observation points allow you to stand out of the way of cyclists and walkers, so you can admire the views easily. This new bridge is made largely of steel and has five arches. Its minimalist, railing-topped construction was chosen so that you could see the forest through it and remain sympathetic to the surroundings. It opened in 2012 to cyclists and walkers.
