Great straight line, best done uphill

A step/ride back to the 17th century!

This lovely country road travels through the charming village of Bishopstone and allows you to soak up wide open spaces and far-reaching views. There is a nearby pub called The Harrow which is a great place to refuel.

Pednor House is a Grade II listed building in Chartridge, Buckinghamshire. Originally a 17th-century farmhouse, it was enlarged in 1910 under the architects Forbes and Tate in the Arts and Crafts style. The house is a large U-shaped structure with a cylindrical dovecote and stands in a beautiful setting. The grounds were originally designed by Gertrude Jekyll.

As you turn off Dagnall Road, get into a low gear and take it easy. You don't want to be going into the red before the twisty steep bit, as it feels really narrow and if you put your foot down it might be hard to get going again.

This stretch of road is called Park Gate. From the top of Park Gate you have extensive southerly views to Mentmore ridge, Mentmore Towers (1850s) and beyond to the Chiltern escarpment are spectacular. Park Gate is set within former parkland of Wing Park which also housed extensive gardens of a lost mid-16th century manor house.

As English villages in the Chiltern Hills go, this one is one of the most attractive. This is the kind of place I tend to think of when I read Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. The village name is Anglo-Saxon and means "a woodland clearing". Another little fun fact: Sir Arthur Lasenby Liberty (1843–1917), proprietor of the famous Regent Street (London) store, Liberty & Co., lived here and built a Manor house here in 1900. He was associated with the Art Nouveau style.

The foundation for the original building was laid in 1280, where it was a Gatehouse for the northern approach to Ashridge and was used by Henry VIII as part of the hunting grounds. But following heavy damage by Cromwells armies, the lodge was rebuilt by the eminent architect Sir Jeffrey Wyattville in 1823. Little Gaddesden Lodge now functions extremely well as a private home.

It can get busy here but when you can get in you are in for a treat. Be warned the cakes are massive here best shared between two or three people. Two pavement cycle stands out front where you can lock your bike

The water tower was built by the Buckinghamshire water board in 1938. On the 11th. April 1943 a four man crew flying in a Wellington BJ879, struck the side of the tower at 00:15. All four were killed. They were doing training circuits and landings, then tried to land twice at Little Horwood airfield whilst the weather was foggy. 26 OTU was formed in January 1942 at RAF Wing as part of No. 7 Group RAF Bomber Command to train night bomber crews using the Vickers Wellington. Stunning, appears out of nowhere!

Lovely village green near Lee Common. A few good benches for a pause, especially if you've just come up one of the hills leading to the green.

Beautiful views of the reservoir - usually as still as a duck pond. And if you're lucky you'll see some actual ducks too!

A nice stretch of road on the edge of The Chilterns. Quiet and usually car free, but don't forget the small climb at the end.

quiet lanes in every direction. Not flat, but not proper climbs either, especially compared to other roads in the area.

Mini Castle, how could you not like it.

beware you brakes get very hot by the time you get to the bottom.. allow extra braking time when you come to stop at the end.
