Heading eastbound, the climb will begin past Paper Mill Lane. The fun and games really begins when you make the right turn south. A proper gut buster from then on, with the bonus of the possibility of cars up your arse. There's little respite once you're past there, as you'll be blowing until you reach level ground. The high possibility of a car up your arse is because Bromley Lane is the main drag between Standon and Much Hadham. Conversely, it's a great descent westbound, though use caution on the northbound stretch, as cars fly up in the middle of the road and the road surface is cack. The same goes with heading down into Standon, as there's permanently cars parked on your right and there are some drivers who don't think it's fair to give you the right of way.

The heart of historic Hertford with it's castle and old inn at the gateway to London proper. Great place to stop and take a look around.

It is actually possible - and permissable - to cycle through the grounds of Hertford Castle.

A stretch of road that presents itself as potentially being a bit dangerous, but is actually OK. It's an easier ride westbound, with the initial downhill and traffic are more wont to stay behind further along when you turn south and begin a minor climb. Eastbound isn't fun up the climb, with frustrated cars behind. It's the law that you get at least one up your jacksie here.

Really enjoyed visiting Hertford Castle. Feels like stepping back in time to the days of William The Conquerer!! 🚴🏼‍♂️

This path follows the beautiful River Stort Navigation canal near South Mill Lock. It’s a lovely flat trail that offers picturesque views, conveniently located just outside Bishop's Stortford.

A relatively quiet way out of Ware, easier eastbound than west due to the ground and wind.

Best traversed southbound for the downhill.

This is a bit of a slog eastbound. The uphill is only slight, but fairly consistent over a fair distance, so you can be tired by the end of it, particularly if you've arrived here via Latchmore Bank, climbing up Church Road.

Travel westbound for the downhill. It's not entirely a gutbuster eastbound, but slower riders won't appreciate the overtaking traffic.

Hatfield Broad Oak is a beautiful rural village that has a church, two pubs, butchers and a village shop. It's probably best known for being the closest village to Barrington Hall, a Grade II-listed red-brick country manor.

Don't fear to cross it.

The history of Waytemore Castle is shrouded in mystery. It is thought that it was a Saxon fortress built in the 10th century against invasion by the Danes but there is no record of it in the Domesday Book of 1086, a thorough survey and record of England commissioned by William the Conqueror after his victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Now all you can see of the castle is the mound on which it stood and the stream to the south and west which would have been a much larger moat. The ruins on top are much later than 10th or 11th century. It has never been excavated for archeological research so who knows what secrets it holds.

Lovely coffee, cake and a sunny spot to sit and have a break at Bean & Gone. Can be difficult to see if they're open though as the "counter" is a bit hidden.

Easy Trail for All age's

Much Hadham is one of the oldest and prettiest villages in Hertfordshire. It boasts no less than four Grade I-listed buildings: St Andrew's Parish Church, Much Hadham Hall, Moor Place and the boundary wall at Yewtree Farmhouse at Hadham Cross. If you're seeking food while on a hike here, there's the Bull Inn or the Hoops Inn at the nearby hamlet of Perry Green, home to the Henry Moore Foundation Estate. There's also a local convenience store on the main Tower Hill road.

The historic Hertfordshire county town, Hertford dates back to the 10th century and is nestled at the confluence of no less than four rivers: the Lea, Mimram, Beane and Rib. The town is home to the Norman Hertford Castle, which is Grade II-listed. Hertford is the starting point of the New River Path and also features on the Hertfordshire Way and Lea Valley Walk long-distance trails. There is a plethora of amenities and plenty of places to grab a bite to eat.
