You need to be fit to cope on this stretch southbound, especially during work hours. Northbound is infinitely easier. Even as an experienced rider, I find the winding uphill stretch between Manuden Lodge and Hazelend Lodge unnerving if there's a car (or a queue of cars) up my arse, itching to get past. The road narrows and is sunken there and the oncoming traffic merrily flies down at 50-60 mph-odd. The queue behind you flies past you as you get onto the slight plateau up near Hazelend Lodge. It's a rule that there's ALWAYS a car up your arse here - that's my experience anyway.

Not for the faint of heart northbound, in terms of both the steepness and traffic rushing by (and darting back into your path as they see a car coming the opposite way). A pleasure to fly down southbound, though watch for the road surface, as it's not entirely smooth.

An easier traverse eastbound.

The road fords the River Ash here near Hadham Cross. There is a footbridge for pedestrians or cyclists who don't want wet feet.

Excellent takeaway for baguettes, cakes, coffee etc. A few outside benches opposite.

A ditch runs along the western side. When it fills up, in heavy rains, it floods the road, badly.

River, sheep and ducklings. Great place for a break, seems popular with cyclists and walkers.

After plenty of rain, good for washing the bike
