Brilliant cafe in High Easter - great place for a cafe stop on a ride through Essex. Well worth checking out

Beautiful grade II listed building. Here is what the official entry says: "2. Mid C16 double fronted house. Exposed post and panel timber-framing, steep red tile pitched roofs. Two and a half storeys. North elevation to Bridge Street has jettied first floor and jettied second floor twin gables. Ground floor has central door flanked by modern mullion and transom windows in original positions and one old mullioned 2-light window. Two modern mullioned oriels on first floor and band of 5 blocked original mullioned 2-light windows. Cable moulded bressummer and carved angle post. Gables have mullioned 2-light windows and pendants to apexes and wall plates. Early C17 extension to west. Two storeys, one bay. Jettied first floor with C19 horizontal sash window. East elevation to Devoils lane has original mullion windows on ground and first floors. Plastered 2-storey, one bay, jettied extension to south with ground and first floor C18 sash windows. Further extension to south. Early C17, matching west extension of north elevation. Two storeys. Jettied, half-timbered first floor with one old mullioned window and 3 modern casements. Interior. Restaurant, bar and terrace with bike-friendly beer garden.

The road fords the River Ash here near Hadham Cross. There is a footbridge for pedestrians or cyclists who don't want wet feet.

The Queens Head is such a nice pub with a garden to stop for a pint and lunch.

It is private, need permission to fish here!!!

A bit up and down, great pavement!

Gorgeous Essex village, peaceful & serene (when I was there, anyway :))

I've always found this to be a more fun descent than a climb. After descending, at the bottom you can turn left to go to Great Chishill (highest point in Cambridgeshire) or turn right and visit Saffron Walden and link up with the 2014 TdF route.

Quintessential Cambridgeshire village, complete with thatched roofs and a small village green. Incredibly peaceful place to stop for a break after the gentle climb.

Great cycle destination from Herts / Cubs / Beds. Lovely roads to get here

All Saints Church

55m of gradient. A steady climb from the Royston Road junction at Clanver End before it kicks a bit after the right-left bend for the last 15m of gain. Going down, there are great panoramic views as you exit Arkesden just before the road drops and you can quickly pick up plenty of speed.

Mostly open views with low/no hedgerows so you can go at a good pace.

River, sheep and ducklings. Great place for a break, seems popular with cyclists and walkers.

After plenty of rain, good for washing the bike
