Great views of the Severn crossing and what a structure it is

Excellent stop, really busy so be patient.

I road from Bath to Caldicot South Wales last summer on this route, amazing calm journey to Bristol, stopped off at the old railway building for a coffee on the way. Excellent path to be fair, even for a Saturday, only about 40 or so at the old station stop, but no issues with riding, peaceful to be fair.

The doors are open in the daytime. Views from the benches overlooking the severn vale not to be missed.

Brandy Bottom Colliery, located just off the Bath-Bristol cycle path, was an important coal mining site in the 19th century, particularly known for its deep mine workings. The site features remnants of the colliery, including old structures and spoil heaps. It operated during a time of significant coal production in the area before eventually closing. Today, it serves as a historical point of interest along the cycling route, illustrating the region's industrial heritage

Brilliant route for kids on bikes- they love riding though tunnels!

Some major works to the first portion in Bristol, and the Mangotsfield section have fixed a lot of the issues that plagued our lovely path but there are still some sections which have seriously deteriorated, most notably the Oldland common section just before Bitton and the section between Bath and Saltford. All this is to say, for the most part I don't recommend this for road bikes. Not only is 35kmh too fast for this path (and you can absolutely get up that fast and beyond), it will also rattle you pretty roughly. I tend to avoid as much of it as I can, only jumping onto it when it's getting late and I don't want to get caught out on country lanes in the dark. A fabulous commuter route though.

Staple Hill tunnel is a disused railway tunnel that was originally part of the Midland Railway's Mangotsfield and Bath Branch Line, which connected Bristol and Bath. The tunnel runs for approximately 1.1 miles (1.8 km) through the hillside, and was opened in 1869. It is now an iconic part of the Bristol-Bath railway cycling path. The cycle path takes up less than half the width of the tunnel and the rest of the floor consists of uneven rocks. The tunnel is lit all year-round, but cyclists are advised to turn their lights on. The roof leaks in places, giving the appearance of rain.

The tunnel is currently (6/22) in rather poor condition. Please turn your headlights on while riding through the tunnel - safety first!

The section from Severn Beach to New Passage on the paved England Coast Path might look tempting to ride, but it is a public footpath only used lots by the elderly, wheelchair users, unleashed dogs, fishermen and young children. Beware as I've hears reports that some locals will you give a lot of grief for riding this section, plus your insurance is void too if you cause an accident... I live nearby and suggest sticking to Route 4, or just enjoy the walk. The bit of Route 4 near Old Passage remains because of sea defence works (reopening late 2022 we're told) but there are nice back roads through Olveston to Aust or Route 41 through Ingst if you plan on crossing the M48 bridge to Chepstow and the more serious hills, beautiful Welsh scenery beyond.

The drainage on both entry and exit to the tunnel has recently been improved and so far there is visibly less surface water…..but it has not been tested yet with a heavy downpour…..fingers crossed 😀

The Church of Saint John the Baptist is late Norman or Transitional, and is some 900 years old. It has two effigies of knights: one is late 14th century, carved in wood; and the other is dated to 1240, carved in stone, featuring a very large shield. These two are considered to have been lords of the local manor. The church is of late Norman period, and although it has been much enlarged and altered, much of the original work remains. In the nave there is an arcade of Normal columns, there are two Norman windows and the tower is also Norman. In the churchyard at Old Sodbury is a number of old bale-tombs; these were tombs for rich merchants. Some of the gravestones date back to the early 19th century. Just outside the churchyard on the hillside is a topograph (a large stone with an engraving), installed to commemorate the second millennium, that shows Old Sodbury in relation to its geographical surroundings. Proper history that. Not sure which part is meant to be ridden with an mtb, the bike path is fine with any bike you want

A very good section of cycle path (cinders). Doable on any bike.

Just as good on a gravel bike, nothing about this requires a mountain bike! Very good section to ride!

Interesting site located right next to the cycle path. Good place to stop for some rest
