Straddling the beautiful River Stour – and therefore both Suffolk and Essex too – Bures a lovely village. Its medieval church of St Mary the Virgin is a fine sight. Walkers can refuel at one of two pubs – the Three Horseshoes or the Eight Bells – and find accommodation at the Old Manse B&B.

Nayland is a characterful Suffolk village in the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With its 15-century buildings, timber-framed houses and the pretty St James Church, there's a lot to admire. The church is home to 'Christ Blessing the Bread and Wine', one of John Constable's famous paintings.

Great place to stop for a drink. lovely outdoor garden. beware, they don't serve food before noon.

Probably one of the best stretches of quite road in the county.

It's just a Greggs, and it is in Sudbury, but useful if you need a coffee and something sugary to eat. If you want to sit with your bikes, there are benches outside, a bit lower down the slope of the street.

Convenient location, just off the main road as you go under the A12, and open 7 days a week (9-5, 10-4 Sun). Gravel entrance.

The bench by the Stour really is a nice spot if you need a stop. There's a tarmac path leading to it if you don't fancy off-roading across the grass.
