This is a wonderful stretch of track running just below Mount Harry, and it continues below Black Cap too before it joins the South Down Way at the Beeches. A great biking section overall.

Nice enough trig pointed hilltop and easy enough to get to with grand views out over the South Downs.

The basic structure of Hamsey church is Norman, having been built in the 12th century. This includes the walls of the nave, the chancel arch and the north and south walls of the chancel. Two hundred years later the chancel was extended in the 14th century and the massive tower erected. The porch was added in the early 15th century. Details of the ages of the various parts of the church are shown in the plan below. http://www.friendsofhamsey.org/history/

If you choose to skirt the village to the south on the Ditchling to Lewes Road, watch out for a section of pink road by the half moon pub. It climbs steeply whilst cornering and is an important place to adopt an assertive road position so that you remain visible .

Plumpton is a charming village of two halves. The southern end of the village is cut across by the South Downs Way near the site of an Early Bronze Age settlement. North of the track is a chalk-cross with a sandstone block at its centre, which commemorates the Battle of Lewes in 1264.

Mount Harry rises to a height of 627 feet (191 m) and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, including the South Downs and the Ouse Valley. It's characterised by the tall brazier, known as Lewes Beacon. This was erected in 2002 as a reminder of the beacon that stood here from the 16th century to warn of danger.
