Quaint Village. Worth looking around the Church and Visit to the Bulls Head is a must!

Going from the road to the ford it gets worse as you go along. During wet weather I wouldn’t even bother trying but there again I wasn’t on a MTB. The ford looks as though it could be deep in the middle with the farm vehicles grooves. The foot bridge to one side has a pipe which you have to get over, no big deal if walking but a bit more fiddly if you are on a bike. Once you get to the middle it gets worse but hour in the middle, do you turn around or hope it gets better. It doesn’t get better…

Great pub, and very historical

The village has many historic buildings, some of which are timber-framed. The Church of St. Swithin is a Church of England church which dates from 1721, and is built on the site of an earlier church. The village also possesses two pubs, The Bulls Head Archived 14 December 2018 at the Wayback Machine and The Malt Shovel, and about 50 residential properties. The Barston Memorial Institute, opposite the Bulls Head, hosts many village activities with a Friday night youth club and regular Art Classes as well as the Barston WI and U3A meetings. There is no bus service or any other form of public transport in the village, although an abandoned bus stop still exists at the end of the central road of Barston, Oak Lane, which is left over from an old-school service from the 1970s and 1980s. Next to the bus stop is an old-fashioned red phone box.

Kixley Bridge No 72 is a minor waterways place on the Grand Union Canal (Warwick and Birmingham Canal: widened section - Main Line) between Kingswood Junction (Junction of Grand Union and Stratford upon Avon Canals) (4 miles and ¾ furlongs and 5 locks to the south) and Camp Hill Top Lock Winding Hole (10 miles and ¼ furlongs to the northwest). The nearest place in the direction of Kingswood Junction is Winding Hole near Kixley Bridge (Reported as too silted up for a 65 footer by Al Wright, Summer 2004); ¾ furlongs away. The nearest place in the direction of Camp Hill Top Lock Winding Hole is Kixley Footbridge No 72A; 1½ furlongs away.

Not sure if it was private or not as it ended up in a private carpark with a automatic gate... Five Templars were arrested at Balsall, as well as Thomas de Walkington, Preceptor of Rothley Temple in Leicestershire, who was almost certainly acting as Preceptor for Balsall also. He was the only Templar to declare publicly that the few confessions had been extracted by torture.

it's a nice walk you can do a small loop around a field and along the river, I've seen family's playing in the water

In Saxon times Barston, sometimes known as ‘Bertanestone’ or ‘Bercestone’ included almost all of Berkswell. In the reign of Henry II and King John, portions were given to the Knights Templars and on their dissolution to the Hospitallers. The foundations of the former, including alms-houses and the Temple can still be found in nearby Temple Balsall. A tradition suggests an underground passage from the Temple to our Church, but this would run beneath the River Blythe, as in ancient times the land formed part of the forest of Arden. This seems improbable as there would have been no difficulty in moving discreetly between the two places.

13th century church part of the Knights Templar headquarters. Worth a visit.
