Hendrix visited the area for eleven days in the summer of 1969, shortly before his era-defining performance at the Woodstock Festival. Countless technicolour paintings of him adorn the walls of The Cafe Jimi Hendrix, while the lyrics to ‘Castles Made Of Sand’ have been painted in a shock of blue across its cream exterior.

To get out of town, the beach stretching to the south of the medina from the fishing port towards Diabat is good for biking, with a wide esplanade. There are frequently camel and dromedary for rent.
