Great coffee and delicious cakes

Swithland Reservoir, opened in 1896 for Leicester, had a 500 million-gallon capacity but became insufficient. In the early 20th century, a pipeline from Derwent reservoirs in Derbyshire was required. As you pass Buddon Wood, quarried in the early Iron Age for millstones, take a moment to enjoy the scenery, woodland, and water birds. You might also catch sight of steam trains on the viaduct from this spot.

Swithland Reservoir is a reservoir in the English county of Leicestershire. It is north-east of the village of Swithland from which it takes its name, north-west of Rothley and approximately 133 metres (145 yd) south-west of Mountsorrel Quarry. It is part of the 187.1-hectare (462-acre) Buddon Wood and Swithland Reservoir Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

A good place to take a breather and watch the boats. Cotes Road and South Street provide a nice, quiet north - south run avoiding the A6 on the other side of the river.

Traffic lights both sides. Nasty little climb up towards the village that will take the wind out of your sails!

Swithland Wood (situated directly across the road on the northern side of Bradgate Park) was one of the first disposals of the Bradgate Estate by the Grey family in 1921. It was purchased by a local timber merchant who felled much of the timber. To prevent the removal of further timber, and to conserve the Wood as one of the most wildlife rich and attractive woodlands in Leicestershire, The Rotary Club of Leicester launched an appeal for its purchase to ensure public access into the future.

The section of Rushy Lane from the reservoir to the farm is rather rough with quite a few holes in the road. This forms part of one of my regular morning cycle routes and the section of Kinchley Lame by the reservoir is quite pretty.

The bridge crosses the River Soar navigation. Located only a stone's throw from the bridge is the Soar Bridge Inn, a traditional pub popular with boaters and walkers attracted by the picturesque scene.

This bridge crosses the Great Central Railway which is the UK's only double track, main line heritage railway. It’s the only place in the world where full size steam engines can be seen passing each other, if you time it right!

Swithland reservoir, built around 1896, is about a mile long by half a mile wide. The Great Central Railway divides the reservoir into two. There is no access to the reservoir margins, but both sections can be viewed from the roads at the North and South ends.

Great place to stop. Good food but can be busy

The cafe is welcome, the farnyard is great for kids amd the motor museum is worth s visit too. The farm ahop has great local food. There’s a bed and breakfast there too. Fanily run

Outdoor seating, right on the river soar. Canoes/kayaks can be moored here. Delicious roasts with brilliant vegan option, and a good selection of beers/ales. A must visit.
