Amazing pub with very friendly staff. Great place to pop in after your walk around Groombridge Place.

Groombridge Place is currently closed but the walks around it are lovely. Plenty of streams and a pond with ducks and geese. There is also a train track that has old steen trains going past.

Nice easy and level walk for all abilities with great parking and a cafe.

On the patronage of this church: The apostle THOMAS, one of the twelve whom Jesus called into the closest circle of his disciples, is not often mentioned in the biblical writings of the New Testament. The most prominent passage is precisely the one after the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which has earned him the unflattering nickname "Doubting Thomas" in popular parlance. The evangelist John reports on this in the 20th chapter of his version of the "Good News" (this is the translation of the word "Gospel"). Harrison's Rocks are a superb example of the sandstone outcrops which are found across the High Weald. There is evidence that Stone Age people sheltered amongst these rocks. For many years, there has been a strong climbing tradition in this area.

Groombridge Place is a beautiful country estate complete with sculpted formal gardens, a moated 17th-century manor house and over 200 acres of parkland. The house and its bridges were designed by Sir Christopher Wren, the same architect who re-designed St Paul's Cathedral after the Great Fire of London. Although the house is privately owned, you can visit the gardens. With a pirates playground and treetop walkway, it's also a great place for kids. The gardens are only open during summer. The Crown Inn is a traditional village pub with a history that stretches back to 1585. During the 18th century, the pub was the headquarters for the Groombridge Gang, ruthless smugglers who terrorised this neck of the woods.
