Excellent hike, but needs a bit of negotiation. My advice would be stay on the road for first 11/2 mile

On the sandstone trail there are many highlights but walking through Cheshire fields in the summer heightens all your sense it is very picturesque and peaceful

A lovely route with some spectacular views. We took a few wrong turns, but soon got back on track. Lunch at The Pheasant was delicious!

Maiden Castle is an Iron Age hill fort constructed around 600 BC. The fort would have been used as an important line of defence until the Roman conquest in the 1st century AD. Today, the hill fort is a scheduled Ancient Monument owned by the National Trust. Set amongst beautiful Bickerton Hills and forests, the hill fort is a popular place to hike and cycle.

An ancient church built over 1,000 years ago, St Oswald is a focal point of Malpas. Standing on the highest point of the town, it's a prominent feature on the Malpas skyline. A Norman motte and bailey castle would once have stood next to the church but they are now ruined. Although the church has undergone adjustments and renovations during its history, much of the original architecture remains including a 14th-century tower and six-bay nave.

At 716 feet (227 m) Rawhead is the highest point on the Sandstone Trail and affords some wonderful views over Cheshire. A little further down the trail, you reach a cave known as Bloody Bones, which you can peek inside.

This stunning section takes you over Bickerton Hill, past the Iron Age hillfort of Maiden Castle, and over Larkton Hill. You are afforded breathtaking views that stretch as far as Wales. The area is a rugged lowland scrub which has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Site of Biological Importance.

Bulkeley Hill is part of the Peckforton hill range and has an atmospheric woodland along its summit. When the forest breaks, you are afforded spellbinding views over the landscape below. Managed by the National Trust, the paths around the woodland are well-worn and can be challenging in places.
