The church originates from a Romanesque fieldstone building dating back to the Middle Ages, remnants of this structure are still visible. Its current exterior appearance was significantly shaped in the 19th century, with notable work carried out in 1862 and a major redesign in 1889, during which fieldstone with brick details (e.g., the portal/gable) defines the building's form. Its location in the Treene Valley and its rich interior furnishings (including a significant carved altarpiece) make the ensemble particularly worth seeing.

A special gem is the village church from 1712. The interior of the baroque hall church was completely renovated in 2002. The beamed ceiling, pews and gallery parapets are painted with tendrils and angel heads, naive depictions of biblical stories and characters. 1,600 parishioners from the communities of Bergenhusen, Wohlde and Meggerdorf belong to the parish.

Here you cross the Treene on a bridge. It's worth getting off because the views you can enjoy from the bridge are truly spectacular.

Schwabstedt was a bishop's seat from around 1268 to 1700 and the Treene was an important waterborne trade route at that time. Theodor Storm dedicated two novellas to the town, namely "Renate" and "Zur Wald- und Wasserfreude".

The Schwabstedt church was built around 1160. It was originally a Romanesque fieldstone building, which lost much of its simple beauty through renovations. The church has had a ridge turret (tower) since 1889, and a large church clock was installed as early as 1644, which is now in the museum.

Stone lock, if you go up the dyke directly behind it, you have a beautiful view of the Eider with the canoe launch site. A nice place for a rest.
