Starting from the forestry commision car park, hed over the bridge and turn right. This will give you several options for forestry trails and if you head towards Lynford you can then pop on to the road for a short trip to Browns cafe.

Go early before the crowds

A really useful wooden footbridge across the River Little Ouse near Santon House. It carries a footpath over the river used by several long distance trails. The Little Ouse Path crosses here.

The Stanton Downham Bridge was built during the first world war as a rail bridge to transport timber and logging machines. It's been a road bridge since about 1922. The bridge crosses the Little Ouse River.

Situated on the Godcake opposite the church.

One of the best places in East Anglia to ride off road - mtb/gravel. A gigantic maze of endless mtb trails/tracks/gravel paths to explore, have lots of fun and get lost (mind the roots). It's just beautiful! 🚴‍♂️

Easy to get to

A great place to top up your water, grab a bite to eat and even pop in to the bike shop if you need.

A good stop off for everything from a cafe to toilets to water point and bike shop if you need something to fix your bike.

The bridge makes an appearance in Dad’s Army series 5 “Brain Versus Brawn”.

A handy entry to the red Lime Burner trail from southern side of the forest

Accidentally burned down in the 1700s and there wasn’t the money or the population to justify rebuilding it so for 300 years since the church has been left as a picturesque ruin.

Santon Downham bridge was built around the start of the First World War by the Canadian army, although a bridge has been on this site since at least the 17th Century. Originally it carried a 3ft gauge railway. The diamond pattern ironwork makes for an attractive crossing over the Little Ouse River. Plans were drawn up to replace it in the 1990's, but were opposed by locals, who liked it just the way it is.

An old ruined church. It is amazing that it is still standing! It looks like it is ready to collapse and fall in on itself and the murder of crows that appear to live there now (cue the Omen music).

Doable on gravel bike.

A little gem of the Brecks. Santon Stanch along the river Ouse, steeped in medieval history. The area here has car parking, picnic area and toilets.

Somewhat unimpressive but never the less, a place of historical interest

Really pretty along the river and in the midst of Breckland.

Lots of activities on offer here. It can get a bit crowded during sunny weather but plenty of space once you head out from the main centre. The forest cycle trails are well maintained and open to all skill levels. There are more routes to explore over on the Brandon side of the forest.
