Useful refreshment stop for cyclists in an area that isn't super-abundant in them. Convenient tables out front and you're allowed to lean your bikes against the building's wood cladding. Open 8.30-4.30 Tue-Sat.

17th century building with impressive chequerboard stonework. Shows how wealthy the town was back in its heyday.

A town centre pub. Does sandwiches 12-2.30pm (4.30pm on Sat). There are some tables out the front but no bike parking.

Castle Rising is a great example of a stone Norman castle with surrounding earthworks to match it is a monumental defensive position with a keep that is still largely in tact, within the keep there are many accessible rooms and some are still covered or have been restored. Worth a visit if your cycling this way. One of the largest, best preserved and most lavishly decorated keeps in England, surrounded by 20 acres of mighty earthworks. Building of the castle was begun in 1138 by the Norman lord William d'Albini for his new wife, the widow of Henry I. This is the gatehouse for an old Priory not far from Castle Rising, now part of private drive with no through traffic for bikes.

A lovely ride along the avenue towards the estate.

I call it a climb... it's Norfolk so more of a bump, however lovely road surface.

The amazing Castle Acre, mainly prodigious lumps and bumps now but you can get a real feel for the sheer scale of the place how it must projected power and authority for Normans to their sometimes rebellious Saxon subjects.

The fantastic bailey gate here reminds me of a similar specimen I saw in Belgium at Veurne. Not far from here is the Red Lion Hostel which is run by a 90 year old lady called Alison, wonderful place to stay if you get the chance.

Watch out, good sandwiches at a good price

Not much of the castle is visible from the road, hidden behind its huge outer earthworks, and a visit isn't really practical if you're in road cleats, but worth a glimpse.
