The concrete promenade can be used as a cycleway between Heacham and Hunstanton out of season or early mornings, with great views across the Wash.

Lovely approach to these gates through the trees along The Avenue.

Main gates into the Sandringham Estate with a nice avenue beyond, there is a nice cycle path through the estate, but be warned it is often closed to bike due to events, this was the case when we visited and we had to detour.

Castle Rising is a great example of a stone Norman castle with surrounding earthworks to match it is a monumental defensive position with a keep that is still largely in tact, within the keep there are many accessible rooms and some are still covered or have been restored. Worth a visit if your cycling this way. One of the largest, best preserved and most lavishly decorated keeps in England, surrounded by 20 acres of mighty earthworks. Building of the castle was begun in 1138 by the Norman lord William d'Albini for his new wife, the widow of Henry I. A secluded and well surfaced lane, mostly pea grit and good for most bikes.

A lovely ride along the avenue towards the estate.

I call it a climb... it's Norfolk so more of a bump, however lovely road surface.

Most tourer's will go to Hunstanton as it's the official end/start of the Peddars way, however if you're heading south instead Heacham is a nice beach to stop at and has some interesting features such as an old arcade and casino and an odd little pub with an obsession with the 1950's and blues brothers!

Beautiful examples of Barrow's that have survived quite well mainly due to how flat the landscape is here. They stand proud of the landscape and are particularaly atmospheric at dusk.

Impressive landmark on the northern approach to Hunstanton.

Excellent cafe serving high quality deli food. Courtyard seating as well as tables out front, or indoors if wet. Open 8am-6pm Mon-Sat, 9am-12pm Sun.

The higher ground above the north-west tip of Norfolk gives views out over the entrance to the Wash and the wind turbines off the coast.

Sitting near the route of the old Peddars Way trackway. Amazing to think that these barrows have seen the Romans, Angles, Vikings and Normans all go by, standing inviolable and immutable.

Pretty little church sitting in a well-tended churchyard.

A small and undistinguished muddy puddle.

Notable landmark, standing on the edge of the low hill that looks out across the Burnham marshes.

Not much of the castle is visible from the road, hidden behind its huge outer earthworks, and a visit isn't really practical if you're in road cleats, but worth a glimpse.
