Ansbach's old town is a great starting point for your tours. Cafés and restaurants await you in the center, along with its historic houses. If you have enough time, a visit to the Residence and its castle is worthwhile.

The Herrieder Tor is a city gate and well-known architectural monument in the Middle Franconian city of Ansbach. It is located on the south side of the old town and is named after the small town of Herrieden, located about ten kilometers southwest of Ansbach.

Margrave George Fountain Margravial interest continues on Martin Luther Square in front of the tourist information office. The fountain is fraught with misconceptions. It was originally created by Margravial Councilor Dr. Pfotel as a gift to Margrave Casimir (1515), but due to false tradition, it was dedicated to Margrave George. The figure supposedly representing Margrave George is actually a depiction of a knight in field armor from around 1500.

The Herrieder Gate is one of Ansbach's landmarks. The 47-meter-high, representative building was built under Margrave Carl Wilhelm Friedrich Brandenburg-Ansbach (1712 to 1757). The octagonal tower was erected in 1750/51 by the court building inspector and chief architect in the Margraviate of Ansbach, Johann David Steingruber. The substructure dates back to the 15th century. The first mention of a predecessor to the current gate dates back to 1374. At that time, the city wall ran further north and the gate was roughly at the height of the pharmacy. When the city expanded under Margrave Albrecht Achilles (1440 to 1486), the city wall and the city gate were moved south.

The old town and the castle gardens are worth a visit.
