When visiting the Red-Brick Warehouse on the Canal, take a moment to appreciate its unique architectural feature: the internal canal arm that allowed boats to be loaded or unloaded within the building. This design, common in historic canal warehouses, facilitated efficient transshipment of goods directly from the waterway to storage. Such features are exemplified in structures like Telford's Warehouse in Chester, where boats could enter the building for loading and unloading. Great pit stop for coffee and cake. No indoor seating but plenty of outdoor seating round the back and covered seating with blankets and heaters round the front. Cake is TASTY!

As you turn onto Wood Hill, you're greeted by the 11% gradient warning sign, so get ready for the steep drop down into the lovely village of Old Dalby!

The church is a Grade I Listed building. Major restoration took place in 1900. A plaque inside the church reads The nave, aisle and tower of this church were erected and the chancel and chancel aisle restored A.D.1900 by Henry Lord Belper in memory of his son William Strutt born Feb.8th. 1875, died Oct.5th 1898.

St Chad’s water was created in the 1970’s during the excavation of the underlying gravel deposits by Haveringham Gravels. As quarrying proceeded, water flooded the lake through the subterranean water table and once the site was abandoned, the lake and its environs were sold to Draycott and Church Wilne Parish Council for £1.00. St Chads Water and its surrounding environments are an important local resource for informal countryside recreation such as fishing, walking and bird watching. The site is approx. 23 acres and consists of the Lake with a circular walking path around it, woodland edges, a wildflower meadow area and in 2023 we have opened up a new area for use as an outdoor classroom.

The disused Grantham Canal passes through the village and there is a large basin adjacent to the main road. This would have facilitated loading and mooring when the canal was in use. The basin now attracts a substantial population of swans and ducks.

A good place to start a cycle tour of this end of the Vale of Belvoir. Up to Bottesford and back and finish watching the ducks in the basin.

Lovely beer garden. Great on a sunny evening.

Cycling friendly cafe just outside Nottingham. The outdoor seating looks over the canal pond next to the cafe, and is great during the summer. The staff are always super friendly. Note that the cafe is closed on some days, so make sure to check out the opening hours before hand.

Lovely coffee shop good covid security

There are some lovely country walks in the area surrounding the large village of East Leake. To the north west are the West Leake Hills, a gently rolling patchwork of farmland and woodland. The Midshires Way long-distance trail passes through the village. In the village you will find a Co-op supermarket and a number of smaller shops for a quick mooch. There are four pubs and plenty of other places to eat or drink. Accommodation can be sought at the Midshires Way Campsite and Alpaca Farm, which has modern glamping lodges, or at Elms Farm B&B.
