The Market Weighton Navigation starts at Weighton Lock on the Humber Estuary and did run to Canal Head, a couple of miles short of Market Weighton. Today, the Canal is only navigable at best as far as Sod House Lock, 6 miles upstream.

Built in 1825 by James Pigott Pritchett and Charles Watson for the Saltmarshe family, eponymous owners of the neighbouring village from 1313- 1974. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saltmarshe_Hall

This is a woodland and wetland reserve with 600m of mainly grass footpaths which create a circular route and can be very muddy during winter. There are lots of tree roots and uneven surfaces across the reserve. Footpaths tend to be narrow. There is one gate onto the reserve at the footpath entrance which is closed from April to July to protect breeding birds.

Buttie bus is a lovely stop for hot sandwich and some lovely cakes.

The RSPB signed a 50 year lease in 2017 to manage Whitton Island as a nature reserve, As a result there has been an increase in the number of birds not previously seen here. It has become a nesting site for the avocet and a feeding/roosting site for species such as pink-footed geese, teal, wigeon and spoonbills.

Saltmarshe Delph is a small nature reserve with a diverse mix of wetland habitats. For a small site There's a wealth of wildlife to be discovered, including birds such as marsh harriers and water rails.

Howden is a market and minster town in the Vale of York, characterised by the impressive arch of the Minster's ruined chancel and the St Peter's Church.

A beautifully decorated 14th century ruin of a chancel and chapel house. The minster church is still operational. The ruin is looked after by English Heritage, but free to enter and view.

Nice RSPB reserve. Egrets, Hen Harriers and loads more. Friendly, helpful...and tea or coffee, crisps etc.

Managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, North Cave Wetlands nature reserve used to be a sand and gravel quarry. It's been rejuvenated in the 21st century and is now a haven for waterbirds and insects. Look out for Avocets, Common Terns and dragonfly.

The road meets the River Ouse here at Whitgift with open views both east and west. Looking east, keep an eye out for the Whitgift Lighthouse, a grade II listed building. It has been guiding craft along the river since the 19th century.

Rawcliffe Bridge is a small hamlet adjacent to the Aire and Calder Navigation. From the vantage point of the bridge you can see along the length of the canal and the marina to the north east. To the south-west of the village is the Sugar Mill Ponds, which can be accessed down Stocks Drive. Until recently these two clay pits for the local brickworks were a waste site. Now it is a peaceful wildlife haven and a lovely place to stop and catch your breath.
