5月 26, 2025, Kirkham Priory Ruins
The remains of this Augustinian priory include a gatehouse adorned with the De Roos family heraldry. You can also learn about the priory's role in World War II, including Winston Churchill's secret visit and its use in training and testing for D-Day.

10月 7, 2024, Rudston Monolith
The Rudston monolith is the tallest prehistoric standing stone in Britain, measuring almost 8 metres high, nearly 2 metres wide, a metre thick and estimated to weigh somewhere in the region of a massive 26 tons. This giant block of grey sandstone or gritstone was errected here either in the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age and is thought to have been quarried more than 10 miles away in the Cayton Bay area south of Scarborough, although the glacial transportation of a large block of stone that was then shaped and utilised by the prehistoric residents of the area cannot be ruled out. The top of the stone has been weathered and eroded into a fluted peak similar to the stones of the Devil's Arrows and a lead cap was first added to try to preserve it in the 18th century. The churchyard of All Saints that it stands in is of course much younger and although the christianisation of the site took place around 1100AD the stone had already stood here for at least 3000 years. The monolith stands close to the Gypsey Race, an occasional stream that flows along the floor of the Great Wold Valley from close to the barrow of Duggleby Howe in the east, past another pair of barrows at Wold Newton and Willie Howe before turning south past the Argham Henge and Cursus down to Rudston itself where it bends sharply and heads eastwards to the sea at Bridlington. The whole of the Gypsey Race landscape was obviously important in prehistoric times and holds a rich selection of sites, most of which have been destroyed or badly damaged by ploughing, including many round barrows, several long barrows, four cursuses and at least one henge. It continued to retain its importance into the historic period - a major Roman villa was discovered to the southwest of Rudston village. In the corner of the churchyard is a much smaller stone presumably brought here from a local barrow and also the remains of a double cist that was removed from a nearby barrow on Rudston Beacon by the antiquarian Canon Greenwell in the late 19th century.

Freewheel all the way down here. Watch out for road erosion in patches.

9月 22, 2024, Cinder Track: Burniston to Ravenscar
Not too sure which part of the route this is, however a lot of the route is more for walker's than cyclists. It is rutted, the surface is very uneven and to be honest quite dangerous for experienced through to young cyclists.

Don't miss the railway platform next to the tearoom, only surviving remnant of Ravenscar Station. Fascinating information board describing the history of "The Town That Never Was".

12月 24, 2023, Ravenscar Tearooms
A fabulous place to stop on your ride, particularly if you're in need of food and drink. There's also some history here. There used to be a railway station at Station Square, but it closed in 1965. Plans were in place to have the whole square developed so that the town would rival Blackpool, but this never happened. The empty square is made picturesque by the proximity of the sea and the rather unusual tree.

12月 18, 2023, View from Common Cliff
Just to the east of the cycle track is Common Cliff, barely a few minutes ride south of the village of Ravenscar. The cliff offers captivating views to the north along the coast to Robin Hood's Bay. A brief pedal further along the Cliff to the east, there's Ravenscar Radar Station, which was used during World War II - you might want to check that out.

11月 21, 2023, Wold Newton

11月 20, 2023, Ravenscar Village and Cinder Track
The village was served by Ravenscar railway station between 1885 and 1965. The former railway line has now been turned into the Cinder Track. At the turn of the 20th century, plans were made to turn the village of Ravenscar into a holiday resort to rival nearby Scarborough. Roads were laid out; some houses were built, and sewers were laid. Because of the long trek to its rocky beach, Ravenscar never achieved popularity, and the development was left unfinished, a town with sewers and streets but no houses.

Cayton Bay offers great views. In April 2008, a major landslip caused tons of earth to slip down the cliff side at the edge of the bay.

10月 2, 2023, Kirkham Priory Ruins
The incredible ruins of Kirkham Priory are located in the village of Kirkham right next to River Derwent. This was an Augustinian priory, founded in 1120 by the Lord of Helmsley (who also founded Rievaulx Abbey). The site is maintained by English Heritage and you will need to pay to get in, it's definitely worth the entry fee though. An unmissable experience, particularly if you are into history like I am.

Good tearooms here, but this spot also has some history. The reason this is at Station Square is that there used to be a railway station here, but this closed in 1965. There used to be plans to have a whole square built up here so that the town would rival Blackpool, but this never materialised... An empty square nowadays is made picturesque by the proximity of the sea and that rather unusual tree...

The view here from Ravenscar is stunning. There are no through roads in Ravenscar so you have to ride down here to ride back out again but it really is worth it.
