Hesket Newmarket is a picturesque village in the northern part of the Lake District National Park. It sits on a terrace above the River Caldew valley and is surrounded by rolling hills, meadows, and footpaths. The village center consists of 18th-century cottages surrounding a long village green with a covered market cross. Although granted a market charter in the 18th century, it remained primarily a rural settlement. Today, you'll find a village shop, a post office, and the Old Crown Inn—the UK's first cooperatively run pub, renowned for its local character and connected to the Hesket Newmarket Brewery, also cooperative and beloved by beer lovers.

Nice stop point for a photo. Lovely views of the castle and river. It is also a good back way of getting into Penrith, avoiding a lot of traffic.

This impressive Augustinian priory, founded around 1169, is just a stone's throw from Hadrian's Wall. Its ruins tell stories of kings, wars, and pilgrims. King Edward I stayed here in 1306 during his final campaign against the Scots, and Robert the Bruce later attacked the monastery. The church ruins still stand tall, with a dramatic triple-arched structure. Built partly with stones from Hadrian's Wall, they include Roman inscriptions. Inside, you'll find the Lanercost Cross (1214) and the Lanercost Dossal, a work of art designed by William Morris.

Lovey little village with the first community owned pub in the UK.

Hartside Cross is the summit of the A686 between Penrith and Alston. It reaches 1,886 feet (575m) with great views because of the scrubby moorland.

Lovely quiet roads, so much more peaceful than the south lakes!

Fantastic quiet road to ride and admire the views down over Mungrisdale to Troutbeck and the fells beyond.

An image above shows the lighting system switched on, however for one reason or another, it was off as I passed through on an overcast day. Another rider oncoming without lights (like me) was barely visible in the middle of the tunnel. Mercifully, we'd already spotted one another entering. If you have an urge to read your phone/navigation device on a similarly gloomy day while the tunnel lighting system is switched off, my advice would be to do so before you enter the tunnel. You're going to need 100% attention if there's traffic ahead!

Unfortunately the river beach with the best view of the viaduct is not accessible from the public trail.

Fantastic multi-user track along old railway. A taste of what its like on one of those long European bike paths that we don't have.

Rather muddy in some spots. At one of the turns, it appears to have been covered up by a shed so it was hard to get around. All in all a nice walk with lambs everywhere.

Penrith Castle is a now-ruined medieval castle. The castle was built between 1399 and 1470 as a defence against Scottish raids. It was begun at the end of the 14th century by Ralph Neville, who played a key role in defending this area against the Scots. It was later transformed into a luxurious residence by Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who became Richard III.

To the right of the church entrance door is a tap with fresh water. :)

This is an old coaching road which links Dockray with Threlkeld. It's a fantastic off-road link which is part of NCN 71. It's mainly excellent gravel but there are some tough rocky sections too. The views make it worth it, even if you have to get off and push.

The public road from Swindale crosses the private concrete road owned by United Utilities. At these crossroads is a fantastic view over the valley which the concrete road cuts through.

Greystoke is a lovely Cumbrian village boasting charming 17th-century cottages, a picturesque village green, and an ancient market cross with roots dating back to the early 1600s.

This section of the road offers fabulous views of Ullswater. Ullswater is the second largest lake in England and stretches approximately 7.5 miles (12 km) in length. The lake's shape is often compared to the letter "Z."
