Stanley Ferry Marina is a charming spot located along the Aire and Calder Navigation. One quirky highlight at the marina is the life-sized stuffed figure known as "Stan," who sits in a chair outside the café.

Rock falls and land slides have affected a lot of the trail. The investment was a long time ago but it’s still beautiful. Personally, Would love to see it fully restored and full of boats.

Cold Hiendley Reservoir was constructed at the beginning of the 20th century to supply water to the growing city of Wakefield. The dam had to be strengthened in 1990. This is a popular fishing reservoir with large carp. There is a nice trail around the edge and the Trans Pennine Trail follows the Barnsley Canal path past the dam.

9月 9, 2024, Horbury
Horbury is a quaint Yorkshire town with a rich industrial history and set in scenic surroundings. It is distinguished by its old architecture, predominantly stone buildings, churches, and quaint cottages. It is particularly noted for its famous town bridge that goes over the River Calder and the 18th-century churches of St Peter and St Leonard’s. In addition, it has trails and footpaths that are available for walkers and cyclists that run along the river and the adjoining Calder and Hebble Navigation Canal.

3月 2, 2023, Castleford Millennium Bridge
Crossing over the river so close to the wier makes this interesting. Quite an attractive location. If you can find somewhere secure for your bike the coffee is pretty good at 'Flavours' in Carlton Lanes Shopping Centre - alternatively you could try nearby Cykel House Bike Shop (with coffee) on Francis Street.

11月 8, 2022, Newmillerdam Lake
Newmiller Dam is the lake created by the dam for the new mill :-) The village is called Newmillerdam as in New Mill on the Dam. The dam was built to provide a lake and therefore power to the mills owned by the Pashley family just south of Wakefield. The lake and surrounding area is now a nature reserve owned and managed by Wakefield Council. The lake has a well surfaced path all around it, suitable mostly for pushchairs and wheelchairs as well as kids on bikes. It's a popular place and fun for a short walk.

8月 21, 2022, Stanley Marsh Local Nature Reserve
This area was once fields but shallow flooding occurred after the Second World War due to the clogging up of surface water drains and mining subsidence. The Marsh was once part of the multi-pit Victoria Colliery which had working shafts between Outwood and Stanley Ferry. The pit here was sunk about 1835 and was known locally as Deep Drop Pit. It had its own pumping engine whose foundations can still be seen. A colliery railway passed through the site between 1837 and approximately 1840 and can be seen today as the embankment. The colliery closed in 1896. On 4 March 1879 while 250 men and 36 horses were at work, there was a large explosion which killed 21 men and boys.

3月 24, 2022, Stanley Ferry Marina
Top tip 😉, when exiting the Ferry Boat Inn via the carpark onto the canal tow path there is a slight upward slope and a sharp turn onto the tow path.....if using an electric bike don't use power unless you fancy a dip in the canal 🤭

8月 24, 2021, Barnsley Canal Trail
Haha the first time my friend and i cycled on here we couldn't get over how beautiful it was. I sorted a circular route back to Stanley Ferry that would take us to the end of the canal. However I missed the turn off that took us to the other side of the canal oops. We came across the railway line and i then realised we were on the wrong side of it. I can't say what we did next otherwise i might get into trouble lol. This picture is the crossover hehe
