Nice walk

Nice cool walk even on a warm day

Wear waterproof boots for the soggy days. A lot of mud and slippery conditions on parts of the route. However, the summer months leave the ground solid and a great location to walk or cycle.

Mostly smooth gravel although eastern end rougher so best to do eastwards. Gorgeous woodland.

The building is mainly made of flint and brick but incorporates a lot of Hertfordshire Puddingstones and classic stones. The church has undergone many restorations works over the centuries with the spire rebuilt after its destruction during WW2. This is a fun and rocky descent or ascent (depending on direction) through towering pine woodland. Be careful in autumn as the leaf fall can cause a slippery surface.

Merry Hill was acquired by the Woodland Trust in 1996. Lots of trees have been planted to create and extend Little Hartsbourne Wood to the south of this path. There is also an area of fruit trees. This path crosses the area and feels like a nice get-away from the busy urban areas that surround it. There are nice views from the higher areas across the open access land and over the city.

The 18th century building was remodelled and expanded by George Woodford Thelluson in the early 19th century. It was owned by several wealthy men, including Sir Charles Pole and J. P. Morgan Jr. During World War I, a Voluntary Aid Detachment hospital was opened in the garage. The attached Church Farm was used as a hospital in World War II, with the house being used by the War Office Selection Boards, Special Operations Executive and Political Warfare Executive under John Hackett and Walter Bryce Gallie. It later became a teacher training college and a residence of the University of Hertfordshire before being turned into flats, with the extensive grounds and parkland being used as a golf course.

This whole area looks great for a bivvy or for further exploration on the singletrack here.

If you come over the fields, you are rewarded with a great place to stop and take in the views.

Gilbert's Lake is currently being run dry as an invasive species was found in the water. Hopefully all will be well next year

Pretty in spring

The lake has a far more intriguing story to it than might meet the eye. It lies within the old estate of Grim's Dyke, former home to W. S. Gilbert of Gilbert and Sullivan fame – the creators of Pirates of Penzance and H.M.S. Pinafore amongst many other plays. Gilbert drowned in the lake when he was 74, during a rescue attempt of a young woman.
