St Chad's was built by Joseph Paget after he inherited his parents' estate and consequently became a senior partner in nearby Pleasley Vale Mills. In 1876, deciding that his household and mill workers needed a church, a chapel was built overlooking the vale, on the Derbyshire side of the River Meden. The chapel was built of timber, painted white, by Cox & Sons of London. After disagreement "over the style of services conducted in the church" Joseph Paget had the church dismantled and rebuilt just over the River Meden boundary in Nottinghamshire, thus moving it from the Diocese of Lichfield to the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham. The church was reconstructed in brick and stone, with a bell tower and lead roof.

A crossroads on a wooded trail near Clipstone. This is a key decision point for runners and cyclists, as it's where the path splits. Look for the distinctive blue waymarker and the unique carved wooden signpost to guide your way. A great place to pause and check your map.

​This is a brilliant little detour for making a nice loop on the old railway line. It's a key connector that lets you get from Crown Farm Way over to Newlands Road without having to hit the main roads. ​Just a heads-up, though: this isn't a tarmac path. Watch out for the section from the Crown Farm Way entrance; about two-thirds of the path is really overgrown with brambles on both sides. After that, it can get very muddy and a bit of a bog, especially after rain, right after the steep bend. I always wear my trail shoes for this part, but it's totally worth it for a traffic-free run!

This flat, peaceful path from Newlands Road to Crown Farm Lane was once the old Mansfield Railway, a busy line built in 1916 to transport coal from the nearby Crown Farm Colliery. A great example of old industry turned into a perfect running route.

This shared-use path in Mansfield, located along Crown Farm Way, follows the straight and flat route of a former railway line that once served local collieries. Today, it has been repurposed into a multi-use trail for both cyclists and pedestrians. The path offers a safe, traffic-free environment, making it an excellent spot for running and walking, although the noise from the nearby main road can be a factor.

What a fascinating find on my run today! I came across this locked gate hiding the grave of Charles Thompson, a local Mansfield figure from the 18th century. He was a philanthropist who, upon his return to town, made some very unusual requests for his burial, including being buried deep on Berry Hill away from the church. Exploring potential cycle route from Shirebrook/Littlewood Lane through to Pleasley Vale/ St Chads alongside River Meden. Path on west side of Meden obstructed by wooden stile then after 300m steep stone stile - couldn't safely lift ebike. Tried east of river, OK to ride but St Chads exit blocked by tight kissing gate - just managed to get Creo 2 through by lifting up vertical on back wheel.

Berry Hill Park, known for its steep coal mining history, sits within around 25 hectares of parkland with a diverse mix of woodlands, mown grassland, acid-grassland and wildflower meadows.

Although the church is not mentioned in the Domesday Book, it is possible that a wooden church existed at Mansfield Woodhouse in the 11th century which was destroyed by fire in 1180. A church, part timber and part local limestone, was built in 1190. A fire destroyed the village and much of the church in 1304. Work on rebuilding the church started soon after the fire in 1306. The fire is commemorated with an Appliqué wall hanging depicting the village and church burning (2004).

The Millennium Green covers around 3.5 acres in a conservation area at the centre of Mansfield Woodhouse. Open to the public, it comprises a mix of grassland, scrub and hedgerows which are valuable for wildlife It provides excellent views over the historic centre of the village, and provides a peaceful place to sit and watch nature and the world go by.
