Sturdy walking shoes because of the sand. Beautiful surroundings for a walk.

A nature reserve of 540 hectares, located along the upper reaches of the Grote Nete in the municipality of Balen. What is special about this area is the combination of two completely different natural cores that seamlessly connect to each other. The Most is an extremely wet valley area, while the higher Keiheuvel is characterized by dry open land dunes. You will find the dunes everywhere in Keiheuvel, but the most beautiful part is behind the Airport. European top nature in Most-Keiheuvel that everyone can enjoy while walking, cycling, on horseback and even in a wheelchair.

Come and have a look at the airport and admire the beautiful spectacle of the playful steel birds. Take your time and enjoy the terrace together with a snack or a drink. Here you can say without lying "I saw them flying".

The Meerhoutse Watermolen is a watermill on the Grote Nete, located at Watermolen 7 in Meerhout, near Molenstraat. In 741, there was already a watermill in this area, namely on the nearby Creyndertloop. The sources regarding this are doubtful, as they concern copied documents. In 1324, a wooden watermill was built on the current site and in this context it was called Ter Nuwermolen (new mill). The current, stone, building dates from 1678. It was a double mill: one part housed a corn mill and the other part was used as an oil mill and bark mill. Shortly after the First World War, the mill generated electricity for the centre of Meerhout. In 1928, the then owner established a diamond cutting factory in the mill building, but the corn mill remained in operation until 1970. Then the reservoir was closed off and the lock was demolished. The steel wheel with wooden blades is still present. In 2005, a fish ladder was built to bridge the height difference of 1.75 metres. As a result, the mill does receive less water. The diamond cutting shop was converted into a laundry. In 1981, the mill was restored. The mill house was converted into a café, which still houses the transfer to the milling facility. The milling facility has remained intact on the first floor of the mill house. The old laundry, of more recent date, is in a dilapidated state, but there are plans from 2003 by architect Peter Masselink to convert it into a visitors centre. Circular walks have been set out from the water mill, which also lead along the Grote Nete. The area is part of the Grote Netewoud nature reserve.
