9月 27, 2025, Eglegemvijver
The Eglegem Pond covers over 43 hectares and was created in the late 1960s as a sand extraction pit for the construction of the E19 motorway. During the winter, large flocks of waterfowl settle here, including shelduck, tufted duck, pochard, gadwall, grebe, coot, and black-headed gull. Eco-friendly bank and roadside management is being implemented around the Eglegem Pond.

The Eglegem Pond, located between Hombeek and Zemst, is a beautiful nature reserve of over 40 hectares. Originally created as a sand extraction pit for the construction of the E19 motorway, the area has grown into a valuable quiet area with great ecological value. Today, it is managed by Natuur en Bos (Nature and Forests) and a magnet for hikers, nature lovers, and fishermen. The area is especially known as a wintering ground for waterfowl such as tufted ducks, grebes, and shelducks. Beavers have also recently taken up residence there. A 3-km walking path, recently renovated, runs around the pond. Dogs are welcome on a leash, and an off-leash area is provided. Fishing, stand-up paddleboarding, and sailing are permitted through recognized associations, but swimming and motorized water sports are prohibited. Thanks to targeted nature management and good water quality, this area remains a safe and peaceful place for both people and animals. An absolute must for those who want to unwind in nature.

6月 9, 2025, Brussels Cruise Terminal
Unexpectedly, you come across this cruise terminal in the middle of the industrial canal zone - a fitting reminder that Brussels has a real sea canal.

A few kilometers from the city center, here it is still quiet. The view looks industrial but still quite green.

Next to the gigantic viaduct of Vilvoorde, the bicycle bridge and lift seem small, despite its size.

4月 26, 2025, Kasteel Ribeaucourt
De Ribecourt Originally, in the 12th century, the castle consisted only of a fortified wooden tower, which was later built of stone. This tower was located on the site of the current front terrace and served as a lookout post and vanguard for the other lordships in the area, until the moment that the lords of Perk came to settle here and expanded the castle. The castle is considered one of the most beautiful lordships in the area of Brussels. It has more than 200 rooms and has been repeatedly adapted over time to the needs of the then residents. The current castle dates partly from the 17th and partly from the 18th century and was rebuilt in the 19th century. During the French rule in 1809, Perk was purchased by Pieter Bounder van Melsbroek, a French officer. He sold his goods in 1833 to Count Prosper Christyn de Ribaucourt, who was senator for Dendermonde. The castle has, over time, received many important visitors. In 1696, the Prince of Nassau-Saarbrück, general of the armies of the United Provinces, took up residence here. On 9 May 1746, Louis XV, King of France, who had made his triumphal entry in Brussels a few days earlier, stayed here. Field Marshal Montgommery visited General Dempsey, who led the battle around Arnhem from here in the Second World War. The castle is still inhabited by the descendants of Count de Ribaucourt.

1月 16, 2025, Weerde Sluice Tower
This is better known as the 'Weerdse mill'. The remains of this building in combination with the meandering river De Zenne and vast meadows provide beautiful pictures. Until 1914, the beautiful lock tower of Weerde stood here. It regulated the flow for the water mill. The lock was built where the tide stopped so that there was never a countercurrent. The first stone of the lock tower was laid in the middle of the 13th century. The lock, the water and grain mill and later (1639) the fulling mill were successively owned by the Duke of Brabant, the Abbey of Grimbergen and the city of Brussels. The residents of the region were obliged to have their grains milled here. In addition, fishing, lock and navigation rights were collected. In September 1914, German gunfire destroyed the entire complex. Currently, only the ruins of the lock tower are still standing. Although there is a lot of demand to restore the original building to its former glory and rebuild it. But that is not yet the case at the moment. When walking or cycling along the path next to the Zenne, this building immediately catches the eye and you can still daydream about the time when it was still a fully-fledged, busy building.
