Memorial for Deportees. This memorial was dedicated to the mother of Simon Gronowski, a lawyer and humanist. She placed her son, then 11 years old, a little further up the steps of the train car. His jump was the stepping stone to freedom and life. She continued her journey with her daughter until their deaths in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Historical interpretation of the major event: The 20th (XXth) train convoy took place in April 1943. The transport consisted of 1,630 Jewish prisoners from Camp Mechelen in Belgium. They were being transported to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Three young Belgian men forced the transport between Boortmeerbeek and Haacht to stop. 231 deportees managed to escape, of whom 115 remained on the run, 90 were recaptured, and 26 were shot during their escape. This was the largest operation to rescue Jews from a train to Auschwitz.

Personally, it's not my cup of tea, far too monotonous. Okay, there are no cars, thankfully. But riders let their horses relieve themselves all along the Reval. And of course, without cleaning up! A real treat... on foot or by bike.

Park Abbey is considered one of the best-preserved abbeys in Western Europe. Besides the abbey and its church, the complex also includes an estate and extensive grounds with meadows and ponds. Although the abbey largely dates from the 17th and 18th centuries, its history goes back to 1129, when the Duke of Brabant gifted his hunting grounds in Leuven to the Premonstratensians. The Premonstratensians, or Norbertines, were considered wealthy and powerful and were therefore called the "Park Princes." They led a privileged life and devoted themselves to art and literature. The abbey's library once housed a renowned collection of manuscripts and early printed books. The abbots adorned the interiors with works of art, including the stained-glass windows by Jean de Caumont in the cloister and the stucco ceilings by Jan Christiaen Hansche. Here—and from many other locations throughout the area—you have a beautiful view of the Norbertine abbey in Leuven, known as Park Abbey. For a view of Huldenberg Castle, you'll need a drone or balloon. From here to Huldenberg, it's about a 13-kilometer drive.
