The pretty lady with long, curly hair, carved into the bark of one of the beech trees, is a work of art dating from the late 1940s. It was created by a young man from the village, in love, as a tribute to his teenage sweetheart. The initials H M do not refer to the nearby town of Hamme-Mille, but rather to the initials of the young woman's first and last name. As a side note, this feeling remained unrequited.

Finally, on the landscape photos themselves, distance markers indicate the locations of (among others) the forests of Meerdaalwoud, Opvelp, and Beauvechain.

The Warandevijver pond was built by order of the Duke of Arenberg some 300 years ago. At that time, Meerdaalwoud was the dukes' hunting grounds. A "warande" (warden) often refers to a (closed) hunting area and/or open space where game was kept. It's a lovely picnic bench where I used to picnic with my parents decades ago.

A small village in Flemish Brabant known for its wheat beer, Hoegaarden boasts a peaceful center and flower-lined streets. The town marks the beginning of the "La Namuroise" cycle route. Take some time to stroll before joining the RAVeL 2, which gently guides you to Namur.

The municipality offers residents and visitors of all ages a beautiful green space – with (water) playgrounds, rest areas, picnic lawns, and carrot benches – that is both sustainable and low-maintenance. The historic park is tucked away behind the 18th-century Kapittelhuys and Arendsnest. It is surrounded by the remains of old cable-stayed walls and features beautiful trees, the oldest of which (Castanea savtiva, or sweet chestnut) has lived here for more than 275 years. The park was formerly known as the "Gardens of Hoegaarden," but due to the combination of more maintenance (including the ban on pesticides) and less funding, it was decided to focus on more ecological and sustainable park management. The themed gardens were removed to create visual axes through the park and to give it a new interpretation as a green meeting place with a focus on recreation, nature, and education. Be sure to admire the neo-Gothic conservatory.
