2月 8, 2026, Path Along the Dender at Okegem
Scenic towpath along the meandering Dender River. The towpath is narrower than other towpaths, which can lead to precarious situations on weekends between pedestrians, runners, recreational cyclists, and athletic cyclists.

Ninove, which acquired city rights in the 14th century, was defended by a castle, a tower, and an earthen rampart, interrupted by four city gates. The gates provided access to the city via the four main approaches: the Brabantse Poort on the road from Brussels, the Geraardsbergse Poort on the road from the city of the same name, and the Kloosterpoort on the road from Aalst. The Koepoort provided access to the Nederwijk (hence also called Nederwijkpoort), the Kouter, and the Dendermeersen. In peacetime, all gates served as housing for the poor, a storehouse for powder and weapons, and a prison. By the end of the 18th century, three of Ninove's four city gates had been demolished. Where they once stood, you now find reminders: a fountain with two turrets (Brabantse Poort), a work of art (Geraardsbergse Poort), and two memorial stones (Kloosterpoort). The Koepoort's survival from demolition likely stems from the fact that it stood least in the way of the city's systematic expansion. The Koepoort, first mentioned in 1397 under the name "Warmoespoort," was completely rebuilt around 1600. It was constructed of sandstone from the quarries of Geraardsbergen and, after its restoration, officially served as the city prison. Because, unlike the other gates, it lacked a drawbridge, an earthen rampart was built around it in times of war. After its function as a city prison, the Koepoort successively housed the city's volunteer fire department and the library. It was then used as a venue for socio-cultural organizations. However, the ravages of time took their toll, and the building required a complete and thorough restoration, both interior and exterior.

3月 30, 2025, Teralfene Lock
In 1859 it was decided to make the Dender navigable for ships of 300T along its entire course. The Teralfene lock is 41.85 m long and 5.20 m wide so that ships of 300T can be locked (passing through a lock). All locks between Ath and Aalst have approximately the same dimensions. All these locks are also still manually operated. Like all locks on the Dender, the Teralfene lock is also a weir lock. This means that there is a weir next to the lock. In contrast to canals, the water flows into the river. When the lock gates are closed, the water must be able to flow further. The Dender has 12 locks and one tidal lock in Dendermonde. The drop (difference in height) is 1.6 m to 2.8 m. The Teralfene lock is the smallest because the drop is barely 60 cm. The water level in Aalst is 50 cm lower than the water level behind the Teralfene lock. The Teralfene lock will most likely be demolished during the planned modernisation of the Dender. The water level upstream would drop. This is positive for the industry and the residents who are located upstream and regularly have problems with flooding. 4月 1, 2024, Wooden Bridge of Wellemeersen
This beautiful bridge, located in Welle, East Flanders, is unique in the Belgian railway landscape. With a length of 250 meters, it is an impressive piece of craftsmanship. The entire bridge is made of tropical hardwood (tropical azobe hardwood), which combines durability and natural beauty. The bridge is a gateway to the nearby De Wellemeersen nature reserve, which covers a vast area of 65 hectares. Originally there was a steel and concrete bridge, but thanks to smart design, this wooden bridge fits perfectly into the environment. The bridge connects to the Welle and Kappelmeersenpad, a provincial walking route of 11 km through the beautiful flood area of the Dender. The African wood requires no additional treatment and should theoretically last a hundred years. Infrabel invested approximately 950,000 euros in this bridge, 20% of which was financed by the European Union.

1月 29, 2024, Erembodegembrug
Erembodegem Bridge is a bridge over the Dender river, which connects the municipality of Erembodegem with the city of Aalst, in the province of East Flanders. The bridge was built in 1859 and is a weir lock that regulates the water level of the Dender. The bridge was thoroughly renovated and painted in 2015, and is now at a higher location so that it has to open less often for shipping. The bridge is still manually operated and can be interrupted occasionally for adjustments. The Erembodegem Bridge is an important connection for traffic between Erembodegem and Aalst, and is part of the Denderende Steden cycle route. The bridge is also a historical monument, testifying to the industrial development of the region in the 19th century.

As far as walking is concerned, here you have a connection to the Dender migration path. Moreover, the road between Teralfene and Aalst is wide enough not to encounter accidents with cyclists.

1月 29, 2024, Teralfene Lock
The Teralfene lock is a weir lock on the river Dender, in the municipality of Affligem, in the province of Flemish Brabant, in Belgium. The lock was built in 1859 to make the Dender navigable for ships of 300 tons. The lock is 41.85 meters long and 5.20 meters wide, and has a drop of only 60 centimeters. The lock is still manually operated. The Teralfene lock is the only Denders lock that belongs to Flemish Brabant3. Historically, Teralfene belongs to the Land of Aalst, which came under the authority of the Count of Flanders in the 11th century. There are plans to demolish the Teralfene lock, because the ashing of ships is no longer necessary and the water level between Teralfene and Denderleeuw will drop. This would have a positive effect on water management and shipping.

The Koepoort is a city gate in the Koepoortstraat in Ninove. It is the only survivor of the four city gates that Ninove once had. The gate gave access to the Nederwijk, the Kouter and the Dendermeersen. In times of peace, the gate served as a home for poor people, a warehouse for powder and weaponry, and a prison. The Koepoort was already mentioned in the 14th century and was called the Warmoespoort from 1397 to the end of the 16th century. Afterwards the gate was given the name Nederwijkpoort. It was completely destroyed in 1462 and subsequently rebuilt.

12月 3, 2023, Oude Kaaibrug Ninove
The Oude Kaaibrug in Ninove was originally painted pink. Not everyone thought the color was successful, so the council of aldermen of Ninove decided to give the bridge a new color that fits better into the landscape. The bridge is now painted in dove gray (RAL 5014).

The statue on the Dender is the Statue of the Fat Van Pamel, a monument in Pamel (Roosdaal) in memory of the popular figure Victor De Klerck, alias 'the Fat van Pamel' (1848-1885). This bronze work of art is located on the edge of the Dender and is by sculptor Patrick van Craenenbroeck. The statue only shows the clothing of the imposing figure, as a symbol of his liberation from his merciless fate. It weighed an estimated 300 kilos and was often watched by the boat pullers who pulled their ships along the towpath1. It made him shy and depressed and he was barely thirty-six years old. The statue was inaugurated on September 9, 2001 and is now a beacon along the Denderkaai. You can also find a playground and a bench there.

12月 2, 2023, Schiptrekkersbrug Denderleeuw
The Schiptrekkersbrug is a bridge over the Dender between Denderleeuw and Liedekerke, which is part of the Schiptrekkers cycle route. The bridge is named after the people who used to pull ships across the river using ropes and horses. It was a hard and poor profession, which was also practiced by women and children. The Schiptrekkers Bridge is a tribute to these people, who played an important role in the history of the region. There is a heritage sign on the bridge that tells their story.
