The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption has a rich history dating back to the 13th century. The original church was a late Gothic building that was later rebuilt in a classicist style. During the Second World War, the church was destroyed in 1940, but the foundations of the old church were excavated in 1943, during which the remains of a 13th-century choir were also found. The current church was built in 1953 to a design by the architect Adrien Bressers. It is a brick cruciform church with an adjacent tower and a modest crossing tower. The church combines traditional and modern style features, which gives it a unique character.

This beautiful bridge, located in Welle, East Flanders, is unique in the Belgian railway landscape. With a length of 250 meters, it is an impressive piece of craftsmanship. The entire bridge is made of tropical hardwood (tropical azobe hardwood), which combines durability and natural beauty. The bridge is a gateway to the nearby De Wellemeersen nature reserve, which covers a vast area of 65 hectares. Originally there was a steel and concrete bridge, but thanks to smart design, this wooden bridge fits perfectly into the environment. The bridge connects to the Welle and Kappelmeersenpad, a provincial walking route of 11 km through the beautiful flood area of the Dender. The African wood requires no additional treatment and should theoretically last a hundred years. Infrabel invested approximately 950,000 euros in this bridge, 20% of which was financed by the European Union.

Fairly young church: built in 1953. Yet the history of the church dates back to the 13th century. Remains of the foundations of that church were excavated in 1943. The church was destroyed during the religious disputes of the late 16th century and during the Second World War. In the crypt (accessible from the side of the church) is the Documentation Center Familiekunde Vlaanderen region Aalst vzw established. Here you walk partly on boardwalks, some of which have recently been restored, others in need of repair. So pay attention! Where there are no boardwalks, you should be aware - especially at this time of year - high waterproof shoes are necessary; After all, they are lakes, wetlands, ...
