Damme's must-see is the robust Church of Our Lady with its characteristic flat tower. From April to September, you can climb its 206 steps for a magnificent panorama. You'll have a phenomenal view of the 17th-century city walls, the Damse Vaart canal, and the expansive polder landscape.

The old bridge keeper's house in Damme is home to Belgium's smallest candy house. It's filled with nostalgic treats! A paradise for those with a sweet tooth. Opening hours: Saturdays and Sundays only, from 12:30 PM to 6:30 PM.

The Slekkeput is a unique piece of maritime heritage that's not even well-known among the people of Damme. A shame, because it's the oldest existing lock in Flanders. You can't see much of it anymore, though, because after the local history society cleaned the lock in 2006, the monument was covered with sand to protect it from the elements. A plaque is all that indicates that there's an important monument buried here. But what exactly is the Slekkeput? It's certainly not a well, but it is a real lock that was put into use around 1660 when the course of the Lieve River (the Damme-Ghent canal dating back to the 13th century) was diverted outside the city. It served to maintain the water level in the Lieve and to allow boats to pass through. Due to the expansion of the city walls with a hornwork in 1701, the lock could no longer be used and slowly but surely fell into disrepair. In 1997, the lock was designated a protected monument.
