Ertbrugge Castle is a castle in the Antwerp municipality of Wijnegem, located at Ertbruggestraat 132 and 136. In the 13th century, the Goed ter Soene was located here. The name Ertbrugge was used for the first time in 1544 and it concerned a hof van plaisantie (country house). The castle was built around 1800 in a classicist style. This is a building with a rectangular plan. In 2000 it was completely restored. It is surrounded by a domain of 11 hectares. The coach house and gatehouse has a remarkable, curved facade. The Ertbrugge estate, north of the Ertbruggestraat in the center of the area, was already known in the 13th century under the name 'Goed ter Joene'. Jan van der Ertbrugge bought the property in 1370 and since then it was called 'ter Ertbrugge'. In 1544 the estate became the property of Heilwich van der Schout and a 'court of pleasure' was probably established shortly afterwards. The establishment of houses of entertainment and playhouses around Antwerp is characteristic of the 16th century. The court of plaisance at the Ertbrugge farm was owned by Jacob Van Oproye in 1581. According to the cabinet map of the Ferraris (1770-1778), the almost rectangular moated castle then included three buildings. In all likelihood it was a castle, a coach house and stables placed in a U-shape. Furthermore, there was a forest with star-shaped avenues within the domain. At that time, Ertbrugge was in the hands of the Wellend family, whose possession it remained until the end of the 19th century. The current domain with its buildings was probably realized around 1790. This can be determined on the basis of the plan of the municipality of Wijnegem from 1809. This shows the Ertbrugge domain in its almost contemporary appearance. The moat was given a whimsical shape with pond arms and probably a landscape garden according to the prevailing fashion at the time. The current classicist castle was also built at that time. At the entrance to the vegetable garden, the plan shows the late 18th century farm buildings. In the 19th century, Ertbrugge Castle was provided with a portico with a balcony on the front facade, while the central bays were accentuated by a mezzanino under a three-sided pediment. Before 1850, a coach house and stables in neoclassical style were added to the former farm buildings, located west of the castle. The basis of the current structure is already clearly recognizable on Vandermaelen's map (1846-1854). After 1960, Ertbrugge Castle was given a new function. It was successively furnished as retirement home and as a children's home 'Immaculata'. In 2000, the castle was completely renovated in the splendor of yesteryear. The castle and the park of 11 hectares were thoroughly renovated, and today the building houses reception rooms, offices and a living loft. In 2020, project developer (Ghelamco) and builder Paul Gheysens, also owner of Antwerp football club, will be the new owner. The area received its current name in 1370 when it was purchased by Jan van den Ertbrugge. The landscape lies on a ridge between the Grote and Kleine Schijn, rivers older than the Scheldt. People lived here from very early on. A number of archaeological finds were made on Galgestraat and Bremweide, including an urn field, flint axes and arrowheads. The landscape is one of the last green oases on the edge of the city of Antwerp. The fact that the area was not parceled out but protected as a landscape is the merit of the Ertbrugge District Group - in 1976 they were real pioneers! On Ertbrugge you will find two classicist castles and 3 farms. The two plaisantie houses De Zwarte Arend and Ertbrugge were both built around the end of the 18th century. Both the Germans and the English stayed there during and after WWII. A walk through the Ertbrugge area is a fascinating experience. You cross different landscapes: meadows, fauna fields, lanes, forest and orchards. The stately avenues are typical for this area. The 600-meter-long linden avenue, called the Boze Dreef, is exceptionally valuable.
