The Waasmunster Bridge, which carries the N446 over the Durme River in Waasmunster, is an old bridge in urgent need of replacement. The work was scheduled to run from autumn 2025 to the end of 2026. However, by the time I passed by at the end of October 2025, it had not yet begun. Legal proceedings before the Council for Permit Disputes appear to be delaying the process. The current bridge has been in place since 1931, and although the superstructure was rebuilt in 1950 after being destroyed during World War II, it is no longer in good condition. The steel structure exhibits significant corrosion damage, which is affecting the bridge's supporting structure. The bridge deck itself is also in poor condition. As a result, a tonnage restriction (60 tons) is currently in effect on the N446. Furthermore, the bridge's substructure is nearing its end of life and is showing cracks. Besides the structural problems, road safety (the lack of separation between motorized traffic, cyclists, and pedestrians) is also a concern on the bridge. The situation under the bridge is also no longer aligned with current needs and insights. To reduce the risk of flooding, a bridge is needed that provides more space for the river and nature. The pumping station is a built dam construction from the 1970s to protect the Waasland behind it from flooding. After the construction of the Dam, the silting became more than ever the Achilles heel of the Durme Valley. Now it is a crossroads of cycling and walking routes.

The visitors centre offers visitors a permanent exhibition about the nature of the region, about the history of the landscape. From the terrace of the visitors centre you have a FIVE-STAR VIEW over the water features. You will not find a better viewpoint. A location par excellence for birdwatchers.

Molsbroek is, together with the Hamputten, Molsbergen and Hagemeersen, one of the four sub-areas that together form the 122-hectare Groot Molsbroek, a fairly extensive nature reserve by Flemish standards.

Besides coal tits, blue tits, long-tailed tits and black tits, robins and greenfinches, blackbirds and finches, with a bit of luck you can also spot the great spotted woodpecker, the jay and the brambling here.

The Hamputten is, in addition to the Molsbroek, the Hagemeersen and the Molsbergen, one of the four sub-areas of the 122-hectare Groot Molsbroek, in which an alternation of marsh, forest, reed fields, grasslands, river dunes and open water creates a mosaic of landscape types. This combination forms the ideal habitat for many plants and animals, including the bittern, which finds an ideal habitat here where it can hunt mice, fish, frogs and insects. This rare bird is present in the area every year, especially during the winter. But it is also (based on planned works in the management plan) designated as a breeding bird. This heron has a yellow-brown plumage with a dark brown pattern and is thus perfectly camouflaged to hide between the reeds. Source: information board on site
