Saint Evermarus is venerated in three places in Europe: in Borth, in Burtscheid near Aachen, and in Rutten, a small municipality belonging to Tongeren in Belgium. According to legend, Evermarus and his seven companions were slain here by the robber chief Hacco. This is said to have happened around the year 700, and his remains were discovered around 960. A small chapel was built on the site. Every year on May 1st, the patron saint's festival of Saint Evermarus is celebrated in Rutten. After a procession through the town, the so-called Martyrs' Play takes place, during which local actors reenact the story of the saint's life and death.

Beautifully situated in a fairly busy bend but a stone's throw from the footpaths with just behind it the access drive to the castle of Hamal (with Christ's Cross). The detour is more than worth it. In 1894 the tram line Tongeren-Fexhe-Le-Haut-Clocher was constructed. The line was partly created to facilitate the transport of beets. A special depot was even provided for this purpose in the station of Rutten. On the orders of senator Count Arthur de Grunne a tram house was also built in Hamal in 1897, at the entrance to the Kasteeldreef. It served as a residence and guard house at the tram stop. Passenger transport on the line was discontinued in 1940, freight transport continued until 1955. The facings are finished with bacon layers and arched friezes in lighter-coloured brick. Cornices have been partly replaced by simple wooden ones, but the gables and the central gable at the fronts still bear picturesque lead ones with metope division and floral motif.
