On Christmas Day 1914, British and German soldiers emerged from the trenches to fraternize and play a game of football in a temporary "no man's land". 100 years later, UEFA placed a monument here to commemorate this. On 17 December 2014, Michel Platini, then chairman of UEFA, unveiled the monument. Beforehand, a film of the football match from that time, here in Komen-Waasten, was shown in the Ypres Saint Martin's Cathedral.
