The gate also serves as a bridge over the Kalebeek stream. The north facade of the gate (facing the church) features, in addition to the date 1864, the coat of arms of the t'Kint de Roodenbeke family, who acquired the castle that year (and still own it).

To my knowledge, it's the only bridge where you don't swear, but are actually grateful that you have to wait because a boat needs to go through the lock. The manual lifting, the whole lock process, and the cheerful note from the lock keeper who politely thanks those waiting afterward... it's quite an experience.

The lock dates from 1861 when a 100m passage was dug to save about 5 km of bends in the Leie. At the lock itself, which is still operated by hand, there are two lock master houses in a unique setting, dating from the 1860s.
