7月 12, 2025, Passo del Bocco
Situated at 956 meters between the Vara and Aveto Valleys, the Bocco Pass is one of the historic passes of the Ligurian Apennines, used since ancient times as a connection between the Tyrrhenian coast and the Po Valley hinterland. Already in Roman times, it was part of a secondary transit network, but it was especially in the Middle Ages and modern times that the pass assumed a central role in local traffic: a route for merchants, shepherds, and pilgrims, it connected Chiavari and the Riviera with Varese Ligure and the Emilian plains. Traces of the ancient paving are still visible today in the surrounding woods. During the Second World War, the area served as a refuge for partisan groups, thanks to its secluded location and dense forest cover. Today, the pass is a destination for cyclists and hikers, immersed in an unspoiled mountain landscape of beech and fir forests and highland meadows, at the gateway to the Aveto Regional Natural Park.

The climb is not very difficult but the asphalt is gravelly and slippery at times. As for the views I must say that they are enchanting.

Colla Isciolli is a Ligurian pass located at an altitude of 410 meters on the slopes of Monte Domenico (529 m). The asphalt in some stretches is uneven or covered with gravel and care must be taken. The landscape is breathtaking.

For the "downhill" enthusiasts, descending from the Bocco is pure pleasure .... but always with the necessary prudence and concentration!

The pass that separates the villages of Loto and San Bernardo offers a suggestive view of the hills in front and the valley of the Gromolo river. At the pass begins the dirt road that leads to Monte Costello and Monte Capenardo, indicated by a sign from the Ligurian Hiking Network.

The road surface from Borgonovo has been almost completely redone and runs very well, but from the pass towards Varese Ligure, especially in the first section, the road is very bad and, downhill, it is a real torment ... Update: between the Pass and the border with the Province of La Spezia the asphalt has been redone!

Arriving at the Bocco pass I take the opportunity for a "second breakfast" at the refuge, but I stop just for a coffee because the increasingly black clouds advise me to return quickly. I still have 2 - 3 km of climbing left to get to the Ghiffi pass and then descend to Borzonasca and then return to Lavagna

9月 1, 2020, Passo Pozzi del Lupo (722 m)
The Passo di Romaggi is insignificant in terms of traffic. It connects the Valle Sturla with the valley of Lavagna, the Valle Fontanabuona. However, since the starting point can be reached much faster by car via the road in the valley, via Carasco, motorized traffic is limited to residents only. For us racing cyclists it is therefore an ideal pass which can be built into many short or long laps. About 700 meters in altitude have to be overcome in a beautiful, varied landscape. If you come from the Valle Sturla, you have a pleasant, rarely steep driveway in front of you. The way out of the Valle Fontanabuona is different. Here, especially in the upper part, there are exhausting inclines, which makes this side a much more demanding driveway. However, both are worth it. Even as a descent, either side is problem-free with appropriate driving style. There is a third driveway to Romaggi which in the first part offers very nice views of the valley to Carasco. It starts just after Carasco, in San Pietro di Sturla. In the upper part of the driveway, you can turn left on a gravel path directly into the upper part of the "normal" driveway from the Valle Sturla. Or you follow the asphalt road after a short stretch of gravel to the right, with a loss of about 200 m downhill and in the small hamlet of Calciana you come to the driveway from the Valle Sturla, where you then turn left. In the beginning, this driveway is quite demanding with steep sections of around 20%. Since it partly runs on gravel as written and also has sections with bad asphalt, it is for cyclists who are not afraid of bad surfaces.

An ascent (or descent;)) that has several access points: from Borgonovo Ligure, from La Spezia Val di Vara and the easiest from Emilia (Santa maria del Taro). The Ligurian side from Borgonovo Ligure does not have prohibitive slopes, but it is long with 800+ meters in altitude in a 15km of km. The hardest part is at the beginning. Attention to motorcycles, all in all good road.

The Bocco pass can be reached by several routes, but it is certain that the road from Bedonia is very beautiful, often in the woods.

At Passo del Bocco it is possible to stop and have a coffee or even eat at the Devoto refuge. Then you can continue as well as for Varese Ligure as I did, also for Parma.

A pass that can be reached from 3 sides is suitable for a stop as there are two bars / restaurants practically always open with the possibility of sleeping in one of the two structures.

The Passo del Biscia (Nattern Pass) is a very small pass at an altitude of 892 meters that connects the large Vara valley with the Ligurian coast. Both sides of the pass are very scenic and near the top of the pass you have a wonderful view of the Tigullian Gulf. Unfortunately, the side into the Varatal (which flows south of La Spezia into the Ligurian Sea) is in a very bad condition, so that you can only recommend a ride on a racing bike from the Varatal to the coast with a clear conscience. The long and very lonely driveway from the Vara valley runs very irregularly with short intermediate descents, while the side coming from the coast is two-lane and very regular over large parts. On this side there is a quarry, which brings some truck traffic with it and may explain the much better road condition. At the top of the pass there are some very recommendable hikes that are also part of the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri. The descent by racing bike towards the coast is highly recommended: speedy and winding on a good surface all the way down to Lavagna or Chiavari.

The nearly 1'000 meter high Passo del Bocco is a strategically important pass in the Ligurian hinterland. Although it is located on the main road from the Ligurian coast to Parma and leads into the great Tarotal, but who knows Liguria knows that that does not mean that is expected here with a large volume of traffic. The winding roads that bring great fun with the road bike, for the motorist is a very arduous progress, so you will prefer the motorway toll in the rule. In other words: you have the road practically for yourself. The Passo del Bocco is actually a major intersection: two very different routes come from the coast from the Sturla Valley, once very challenging over the Passo del Ghiffi, once very regularly ascending on the direct route from Borgonovo Ligure. A road comes from the Vara Valley via the Passo di Malanotte. Last but not least the way to the Tarotal, the Taro rises a stone's throw from the pass. The passage of the Passo del Bocco is always a pleasure and is due to the available variants often part of Ligurian cycling or hiking tours. At the top of the pass there are two Ristorante with bars, the larger being open only in the summer months. Here you can sit outside in good weather conditions and eat well. Speaking of the weather: the climate on the Passo del Bocco is windy and rough. It is not uncommon for snow to fall here for the first time in September.
