The complex was built on the original Chapel of Our Lady of Mercy, erected before 1300; a hospice with a portico built in the 14th century by the Knights of the Order of Malta; and the church, with its sacristy and adjoining living quarters, built between the late 14th and early 15th centuries. According to some studies carried out on site, especially on the chronology of the building, the construction of the church could not have been earlier than the second half of the 16th century.
