suggestive tour for the panorama. Always paved road, with small bumps in some stretches, but a worrying nuance. The complete lap, which I hope to do in the next few days, will be around 88km with a fairly demanding altitude difference. Without haste, and with the right timing, I hope to make it :) If there are cyclists in the area, we can think of a collective ride, at least until the 27th ;)

On the summit of Monte Gelbison at 1705 m asl is the sanctuary of the Madonna del Monte Sacro, a destination for pilgrimages and devotions. From here you can enjoy a spectacular panorama, and the path to get there is almost entirely in the shade in the woods, therefore suitable even on the hottest days.

Monte Gelbison is the fourth highest mountain in Cilento. On the 1705 meters high peak, there is the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sacro Monte di Novi Velia, a destination for pilgrimages since the 16th century. The sanctuary of the Madonna del Sacro Monte di Novi Velia, known in Cilento more simply as the sanctuary of Monte Sacro or Madonna del Monte, is located in the municipality of Novi Velia on the top of Monte Gelbison, at 1705 meters above sea level. The religious site is a destination for pilgrimages since the fourteenth century and is known for being an extraordinary panoramic point over Cilento, Vallo di Diano and the Gulf of Salerno. Probably, in the same place where the Marian sanctuary is now present, there was an ancient pagan religious temple, built by the Enotri in honor of one of their deities, identified with Hera. The religious site was almost certainly already known at the time of the Saracens: in fact Gelbison seems to derive from Gebel-el-son, which in Arabic means "mountain of the idol". It is believed that the foundation of the Christian sanctuary, on the pre-existing pagan site, dates back to the 10th or 11th century by the Italo-Greek Basilian monks who settled in Cilento at the time of the Lombards. Initially the Basilian monks had to settle in the caves, of which Mount Gelbison is rich, to devote themselves to hermit contemplation, and then build a place of worship on top of the mountain. The first document attesting the existence of the sanctuary dates back to 1131, speaks of a rupis Sanctae Maria in the fief of Rofrano (the other side of the mountain with respect to Novi Velia) and is found in a Diploma given by Roger II the Norman, at Abbot Leonzio of S. Maria Grottaferrata. Later the Christian religious site would be enlarged and, having become a sanctuary, it was owned for a few years by the bishop of Capaccio but in 1323 Riccardo di Marzano, Marshal of the Kingdom of Sicily, duke of Sessa, count of Squillace, baron of Novi, prince of Rossano bought it to give it to the monks of the Celestine congregation of Novi, for whom he had changed his castle into a convent [1]: When the Celestine Order decayed and died out completely in the century. XVIII, the sanctuary returned to the bishop of Capaccio

It is very likely that the Greeks of Focea and Elea (Velia) traveled all over the territory of today's Municipality of Ceraso in climbing to the Terre Rosse and the Beta pass. And it is not to be excluded that some of them, in search of good wood to feed the shipyard of Velia, stopped, and then held back, on the large river terrace (river Palisco = mountain, today Palistro) at the mouth of which it was the northern port of Velia. A place that appeared to them very charming, seen from the top of the Tempe, rich as it was in cherry trees of the genus prunus. A terrace surrounded by long-standing tall trees. They certainly stayed there when the locality became an important road junction. In fact, the fluvial road, the road along the Palistro, reached it; a short distance from that place passed the road to the Terre Rosse; from there the easy way started which, by today's Coste delle monache, led to the Alfa pass (Cannalonga) and from there into the Vallo di Diano. However, it is certain that in the early Middle Ages the inhabited area in the place must have been particularly flourishing if in ancient documents it was indicated to locate nearby settlements. A parchment dated 6 May 1149 by Pope Eugene III recognizes the monastery of Santa Barbara as “ubi Cerasus dicitur” (where it is called Ceraso) to the abbey of Cava. News confirmed by another of Pope Alexander II a few years later in January 1168. The inhabited area also expanded due to its happy geographical position, in the center of the towns that were then to build its hamlets in the Napoleonic era, when the town was chosen as the capital of the Municipality. An important agricultural center, due to its very fertile alluvial soils, the town continued to develop gradually, achieving a singular building increase in recent years. This was determined by the improved economic conditions of the population which allowed not only the renovation of the old houses, equipping them with useful modern structures, but also allowed the construction of new housing, especially single-family homes.

The Sanctuary of Licusati, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary Annunziata, stands on the hill of the same name that dominates the entire valley, located at the foot of Mount Bulgheria. It can be reached from the SP 66 road, at the intersection of Sellata-Sant’acqua. It is a place very dear to the Licusitans, the only Marian shrine in the municipality of Camerota, the destination of a very classic Sunday walk. According to an ancient tradition, the church was built by the Basilian monks in the period high medieval and dedicated to the Virgin "hodeghitrìa", their guide of the journey. The Basilian monks, around the 10th century, built an abbey dedicated to St. Peter and had territorial jurisdiction over the entire valley and surrounding areas, as the numerous agionomata and toponyms. The abbey, during the Norman-Swabian period passed to the order of the Premonstratensian canons regular and then returned to the Basilian monks.

We avoided the steep ascent and descent to Morigerati and started walking from the road from Sicilli. On a beautiful path we go along the Bussento with some very beautiful mossy trees - wonderful to walk and look at.

The route is well maintained and fairly straightforward. There are no particular points to report. The only advice: wear trekking shoes and have a little training as it is downhill at the beginning, but on the way back the climb is tiring, as in a few kilometers you will have to face a decent difference in height. In the lower part, you have to be careful not to slip on the boulders, especially if it rained in the days before.

Especially at high temperatures, the hike is a good way to avoid the heat, as it runs constantly in the shade. Each yellow sison seems to be extinct. The path initially leads through a dense population of ferns and chestnuts, with further ascent dominate coniferous trees. Depending on the time of the hike, it may seem extinct on the Monte Gelbison.
