The First Monk's Cell, Mariazell According to tradition, the founding of Mariazell is attributed to a Benedictine monk named Magnus, who was sent from his mother monastery of St. Lambrecht to minister to the shepherds in the area surrounding present-day Mariazell. His journey led him to a hilltop at the site where the pilgrimage basilica now stands. There, he placed a wooden statue of Mary on a tree stump and built a wooden cell over it, which served as his chapel and living quarters. Mary in the (monk's) cell thus gave this place its name. Mariazell Basilica Legend tells the following founding story: In 1157, Abbot Otker of the Benedictine monastery of St. Lambrecht sent a monk named Magnus to the Mariazell area, which belonged to the monastery.
