Located at 2,450 m above sea level, on a spectacular natural balcony overlooking the upper Valmalenco, with a direct view of Monte Disgrazia, the Italian-Swiss ridge, and many high peaks of the Rhaetian Alps. Reaching the refuge is a hike of medium difficulty: from the village of Chiareggio, it takes about 2.5 hours to climb (850 m of elevation gain), while from San Giuseppe it is slightly longer but with gentler gradients. The trail is well marked and offers increasingly expansive views as you ascend. Excellent cuisine featuring typical Valtellina dishes.

Perfect for a mid-November visit, as I did today. The lake is frozen and magnificent to see. It's a short drive from San Giuseppe—it took me an hour and a quarter—but there's ice in some spots, and it's quite cold, being on the dark side. But it's worth it.

A charming alpine lake with turquoise waters, nestled in a valley surrounded by hills, with a beautiful view all around. It can be reached from San Giuseppe (1h30min from signs) and from other itineraries in Valmalenco. The path from San Giuseppe has some steep and wet sections, especially during the thaw: comfortable footwear suitable for the terrain is recommended.

Excursion suitable for everyone. You can leave your car in the paid car park at the foot of the second dam (point the navigator towards Alpe Gera). From there, go up the dam via the dirt road that starts from the meadow. The route suggested here is the so-called "clockwise tour", which passes on the left side of the lake. The climb is rather soft and does not present any particular critical issues. The refuge is large and well equipped, you can use it as a base to climb to the Fellaria glacier, which is wonderful. The refuge is open from the beginning of June to the end of October. After the cordoned-off part of the path (the view is beautiful) you pass under this suggestive rocky claw....then a steep zigzagging uphill section begins.....then take a breath and stop to enjoy the view (better in the afternoon with the sun reflecting on the lake)

The Rifugio Cristina is a refuge in the Valmalenco where it is possible to stop both to eat and to sleep. The context in which it is inserted – Alpe Prabello – is one of the most spectacular in the whole valley. The refuge is bike friendly!
