One of the most unusual fortifications, but one that is probably a brilliant technical solution, is the dam at Borghetto. This structure is a fortified dam wall that was intended to dam up the Mincio in order to "turn off the water" to the city of Mantua, but this never happened. The Scaligers were the builders of the dam wall. The dam wall now serves as a bridge.

The Mantua Peschiera cycle path is a long route – sometimes paved, sometimes dirt – that connects the two cities. A route that unravels along the idyllic Mincio river, weaving together history and nature. Pedaling you pass through landscapes, and encounters with local fauna are not uncommon.

Borghetto sul Mincio is a municipality in the province of Verona which stands on a river ford. In medieval times it was used as a toll booth. Thanks to the Viscontis (dukes of Milan) the village acquired importance and a defensive wall was built around the town. The Duke of Milan, in a dispute with the Gonzagas in Mantua, decided to build a dam to divert the Mincio river and ultimately drain the lakes around Mantua. The project failed and a wooden bridge over the Mincio was built instead.
