It was built in the historicist style on Piazza Verdi at the former western gate of the old town of Palermo. A church and the monastery of San Giuliano previously stood on the site. Both were demolished to make room for the new building. The architect was Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile, who began construction in 1875. After his death, the building was completed in 1897 by his son Ernesto Basile.

After a long closure caused by corrupt building policies, it reopened in 1997, just in time for its centenary - a symbol of Palermo's cultural and political rebirth. The Teatro Massimo's fame extends beyond Italy's borders, not least because of its role in the final scenes of “The Godfather III”. But beyond its cinematic fame, it remains a vibrant center of art that connects visitors to the depth and diversity of the opera world.
