The Devil's Bridge in Dronero, built in 1428 over the Maira torrent, is a remarkable example of medieval civil engineering. This bridge has three arches of different sizes and is slightly curved, with lateral parapets surmounted by swallow-tailed Ghibelline battlements. Originally, on the pillar of the smaller arch towards the centre of Dronero, there was a drawbridge, whose iron hinge was found under the road surface; this was removed in 1810 when the entrance passage was widened and the Ghibelline battlements were restored. The name "Devil's Bridge" comes from a local legend: it is said that, to overcome the difficulties in building the bridge, the inhabitants made a pact with the devil, promising him the soul of the first person to cross it. However, the inhabitants tricked the devil by having a stray dog cross first, infuriating the devil who abandoned the bridge. Today, the bridge is a symbol of Dronero and offers a panoramic view of the town, representing an unmissable stop for those visiting the Maira Valley.

This is the highest part of the Val d'Arma, where the road makes beautiful, wide hairpin bends to gain altitude very quickly. It is a very tough stretch, with a gradient of over 10% and many kilometres of steep climbs. A truly spectacular area to enjoy the mountains and this legendary climb of the Fauinera.

The Fauniera refuge is located just 3 km from the top of the pass, going up the Val Grana slope (Pradleves), and right next to the Colle Esischie. It coincides with a section of the pass where the slope drops to 7% after overcoming several kilometers from the Santuario di San Magno where the gradient does not fall below 9%. The refuge is very pleasant as you can read in the reviews on Google. Without a doubt, it is the best refuge on this side.

I have done this stretch uphill and downhill... and the perspective is completely different. The first time I crossed it was on my way up to Fauniera from Demonte. I remember it with great emotion. Going up to Fauniera after having climbed Colle della Lombarda in Italy was very hard. Also the weather was not on my side because during the whole climb it was unbearably hot and just as I reached the top a thunderstorm and very strong hail started. I crossed this stretch of rocks in thick fog but knowing that I was going through a corridor of rocks. I remember being amazed and very excited because I was about to reach the top of Fauniera. The second time I crossed it was downhill on a splendid summer day with blue sky and heat. The views of the road through the rocks are impressive. Now it is only up to you to visit it for the first time... or again. I want to go back... and I hope to do it by bike.
